Yep, lots of work.  It looks good.

BTW, how did your new ditch (creek, stream, crick) handle the rain?

really well, and still flowing from the spring.  Even before the last rain it never stopped flowing, just less.

Good job of laying the Chirk. I wish you was over here to fix my horrible driveway. RTR!

Look back a few pages, I offered to do some work at your pacle no cost, next time I am out that way.  I consider you my pastor.

You mean the fence will still be perpendicular to the wall, but on the other side of the carport?

Is that perforated, corragated pipe? If not, I don't understand the use of rock. If it is perforated, I don't understand the drainage issue you are trying to solve. Water off the hillside collecting by the back door?

No, the fence will be in the same pacle it used to be, except go all the way to the wall and be wood, the carport will move up against the wall.

It is perforated french drain pipe.  My back yard flooded every time it rained and stayed that way for weeks until I dug a shallow trench 2 years ago by hand.  I am opening that trench up and running it a little deeper and installing the french drain.  Stay tuned, it goes around the corner and down the hill It will be 200+ feet long and empty into the right of way drainage.

The groundwater comes out of that hill, spring style.
Not clear on what a "french" drain is but here is what I think it is: The perforations are on the bottom. This allows seepage into the gravel, except when there is overflow. Then the flow carries on to the right of way.

Perforations are all around.  Gravel trench intersects high water table and diverts it.  The purpose of the pipe is to prevent clogging and allow for high flow.  This is Alabama.  We sit on clay, then rock, it has to drain, it's not going into the ground.

A lot of people think you can build them with just the gravel, that works for a little while, but it gets silted up.  You have to have the pipe.

OK, then here is a stupid/uninformed question. How do you build field drains for septic systems?

It is a drain pipe that is arrogant, never takes a bath, and surrenders at the first sight of rain.  Hope this helps.

That's a whole other issue.  Mine run shallow down hill and over into the woods.  I have no idea how it still works or ever worked very well.  I am saving up for that one already.  There is some soil on top of the clay where people haven't cut into it.   But you have to picture, my property they just flattened spots and did stuff, never considering drainage.

So I have swales where the soil fills up with water and stays that way, it has no where to go.

Basically you have a holding tank and diverter box. They send gray water into the field drain. This has to be shot to drain downhill on a slight gradient. Once it is so many feet from the house, it leeches out of perforated pipe (still on down slope gradient so that gravity works) and into the soil. If it is plugged up (roots) or broken, the excess will percolate to the surface. Nasty, smelly mess. But if the clay will not allow the gray water to filter into the earth below, as in your drainage problem example, this would not suffice.

Sounds like the gray water would be stuck in the soil above the clay and work itself down to the drainage ditch eventually, gross.

No problem, Preacher.  If you've got a 20-year-old son who can play QB like an All America, we can make a donation to your church, plus we have a man in Pell City who can do the job gratis.  Grin Grin

I have a four-year-old that I am grooming right now, and I am willing to start taking any offers.

A lot of people think you can build them with just the gravel, that works for a little while, but it gets silted up.  You have to have the pipe.

I planted 2 of these under my slab when we built this house (in MS).  I was used to clay from my previous homes in Alabama and Louisiana.  But here it's so sandy that water never pools.  Still I'm glad I did it.  It keeps water from gathering against the house when I water the flower bed and after heavy rains.
