Here's the deck.  We just tied the new portion onto the existing deck.  He has a new screen porch (barely visible at left), so to get to the deck (before the deck addition), you had to open doors.  Now you can walk out from his patio onto the deck.

I know, looks like me with a bag over my head.  Grin

Here I am pie-faced.  This house was hit by a tornado 3 years ago and again 1.5 years ago.  I know, I'd move away.

But I've helped him rebuild.  He's my best friend.  His barn was destroyed; now he has a big metal building instead (workshop and tack room).  His 2 horses were killed; now he has a girlfriend with 3 horses.  His pool fence was ripped away, cracking the cement and plumbing; he now has a new pool.  He has hardly any big oaks left, but in this pic you can see his field a bit behind the house.  It used to be wooded much more.
The guilty carpenters. lol. Tragic events at his house. Sad

Definitely guilty.  I confess.

Another tragedy came after the first tornado.  The insurance people would only pay $12k on his out buildings (pool house, barn, shop, etc).  He thought they were covered 80% (wrong).  Then they paid only for the square footage of each part of each room damaged.  There was a tree through his roof, right over his bed.  They came and measured the hole in the roof to estimate damage coverage, then only paid for the square footage damaged.  They didn't pay for a new roof, just patchwork.  Some fleabag insurance company.  I don't remember the name.  He lost his entire savings, and now has a huge loan to pay off.
And we're (not me) sending $$$ to the barn. Huh? Angry

Not me either.  My buddy lost more trees on his 20 acres than most college campuses have.  No crying about Toomer's from me.

Thanks, WV.

But he is truly a great friend and one of the good guys, so no thanks due me.  He works hard and is generous.  I enjoy working with him at his house as a hobby, plus I've worked with him at his church (replaced windows and rebuilt the entrance) and at volunteer projects for the county.

You can see the screen porch a bit better (at left).  That was last summer's project.

I am envisioning a wood rot problem on the new screened in porch. I say this because I fight the same problem-- dirt, moisture up against ground level trim.

The flower bed at left is new.  His gf just added that.  At least the porch is built on a slab (old carport), so there isn't much contact with soil and wood.  I'll have him smack her for the new bed.  They're raising pole beans in that bed to block the late-afternoon sun.  They're just up at far left (behind her marigolds).

Here's a pic of him (pie-faced) when I'm facing the house.  The deck is nearly finished here.  You see how it ties in to the patio area.

That's a new roof (post storm) over the patio.  He did that last fall.

Every 4 or 5 years I have to replace a couple 1x12s. Not a huge deal. Worse is that even when mulched, heavy rains splatter dirt on the facing. Even more noticeable with mine because it is painted white. But I try to keep mulch, leaves, etc, raked away from the porch, but it is a constant struggle.

Thanks for the advice.  It's not that bad here.  You can see the lumber is treated.  Plus the soil is so sandy here that water doesn't pool, at least not around his house or mine.  Can you see that sandy stuff in the foreground?  Sea turtles would walk 20 miles to nest in such sand.  Termites are seldom a problem (which they were in Fairhope and Louisiana for me).

Still, point well taken.

Nice decks.  Never really heard of termites being a problem down here, I dont know if its the humidity or what.

There is a deck project somewhere in my future.
