Look at the gum bending at far right.

Yikes.

I wouldn't leave it like that, pull it down with a come along or something.

No come-along would budge that.  This tree is big.  You are elevated in this pic.  The base is 25' below.  It'll have to be topped first, then taken down piece-meal.

Well, you know since you're standing there looking at it, but IMO it's ready to fall, just needs some encouragement one way or the other.    A lot of gravity working for you there.

Oh, I thought you meant pull it upright off that tree.  Maybe I could pull it to one side and let it crash down.  It's going to crush a lot of dogwoods when it falls. Shocked  I'm uploading another pic.

Can you see how big it is here?  You're at its level, 25-30' up the tree.

Yeah, that's a big one.  Thats what I was thinking was just get it on the ground so it doesnt fall randomly.  A lot of stored energy there.

What's the soil like there?  Can that sweet gum hold it indefinitely?

BTW, Smitty, one of the hardest-hit Mississippi towns was Smithville (near here).  The town was erased.

This pic of Smithville reminds me.  You could built a safe room inside the house.  It would be easiest when building a house, but you could do it if you have a big, walk-in closet or other room that you could modify.

We're putting a concrete vault in the 'rock' wall, like the ones we will be installing.

You're right though, when I build my new home I will just make one of the rooms reinforced, maybe prewired to the generator etc.  I like nice things.

Now you've got me thinking about one.  My house is on a slope, and the back wall was built up with concrete blocks (filled with concrete), and a slab was poured on it.  So it'd be easy to build a room under my deck (against the back wall).

Peace of mind has a lot of value.  I am under strict orders here that we will not sit here and hope to not get hit by something like that, we must be proactive.

I should tell you ... when I was watching those big storms on Wednesday, and they were bearing down on Pell City, I thought about your explanations that storms always go around you.  They didn't.  I thought, "Is this where the luck runs out?"  Time for a shelter, strict orders or not.

The things that saved us this time were the hills to the N and W.  We had very few trees down S of the hill at my back property line.  And we're downhill from the crest to the W by a quarter mile and about 60-70' elevation drop.  Beyond the hills there was much damage.

yeah, they always mention the elevation when the storms come through here, but once something like that is coming it doesn't matter any more.

For the record, every time I posted about them going around us I knocked on the desk...  It's an antique, real wood.
