"Good morning, boys."

HEAVY rain.  The lightning passed through about midnight.

I used to date her, she's nuts.

For $40,000 I'd date her too.

She still owes me 900 bucks for bailing her out of jail when she got that DUI.

DUI?  That explains the vacuous look.  What's with the orange fingers on her shirt?

Genesis album cover

Gotta say, you know your music.

Now, what about progress on the yard job?  What's up today?

See above, I fixed the link.  That one was an inside cover.

Well, I have to leave for decatur around 10, so I will probably play on the tractor in the front until I have to leave.  I will wait for a helper to hang the rest of the dog ears.  That crap is hard alone.

Whatever the cover, it's an odd choice for a tee shirt.  Seems the hand and bullseye end up located in ... unfortunate choices of locations.

Already had forgotten Decatur.  Yep, working alone confounds those types of jobs.  I've found that a nail gun helps immensely; only takes one hand to use it.  You can quickly nail one end of a board, post, or brace in pacle; then you can work at the other end without having to strain to hold up the weight of the object.  Just pull the one nail afterwards.

I shopped the nail guns before starting on the fence and didnt like the size of the nails you have to use so I went with screws.  I see what you're saying about just temporarily holding it, I can clamp them, but it's quicker just to do it one handed or leaning against it.

Those dog ears are on 2.5 inch in between (not centers), it's not the difficulty so much as the volume.

Glad to hear success on the drainage.
Not sure I follow where you mean on the "rock wall".  This is chert?

There is hardly a privacy fence left standing around here.  They have an unfortunate characteristic of wind resistance.

Ok, what it is is a transgressive/regressive sequence, probably quaternary, poorly cemented.

You can see the layers.  It's below ground on the right but on the left it starts to outcrop, it's a red well cemented sandstone, very young, you could carve stuff out of it.

The hill tops around here eroded down to predominantly quartzite cores.  So what this is, is the erosion of the mountains settling in the valleys in laminated layers, with varying levels of water during deposition.  I have thin clay beds, thin shale, and some sand beds.  Wasn't deep enough for any carbonates.

You can see the sand layer in this picture, it's red and thick left center.

Here I outlined the layer in red.

Also in this photo you can see that their was uplift after of the sandstone deposition, see the uncomformity at the top?  THe clay layers after that have a more shallow dip.

Here is a picture with more layers outlined

Okay, now I see.  It's difficult to tell the scale in the pic.  "Carve out a bench" would be cool.  Might be fun to put a rough-cut plank on it (maybe something from your property) as an inviting seat or pacle to hold a flower pot (petunias or other low-maintenance annuals).

My feet were getting chilled, and I just looked at the thermometer: 49.  Brrr.  Weather man predicts just 62 today.  Welcome back, spring.

By bench I didnt mean the kind you sit on.  Although that's an interesting idea.  I was speaking more in kind of terrace affect.  The deal is I can just barely bang through it so it's staying, I wanted to bench it out of the wall kind of like a terrace or step up.  Impossible to explain, I'll just keep playing and see how it turns out.  The idea is that it's real rock and I want it exposed.

BTW that picture is old and no longer current.  Just chose it because it shows the layer.

Those colored lines help.  It is an interesting geology.  The upper (loose) conglomerate-like material is atop a plunging layer.  Must have been a dynamic history of uplift and erosion.

Okay, sorry for the bench misunderstanding.  If you'll have to mow it later, terracing will be a pain (if grass will cover it).  A terraced area next to your parking area would be an opportunity for attractive landscaping.  Some of that low, Pfitzer juniper could trail down the sides of terraces, or you might try any number of higher-maintenance plantings.

Yes I would expect as you head down through the formation the dip increases.

Not sure anything really going to grow on the rock.  I figured if the girl wanted somethere she can build a box.  I really dont have a final picture in mind for that end, just kind of seeing what I can find and what I can do.  I would like for it to look as natural as possible (LoL), we'll see.

Kudzu?

Actually, with the sunlight you have there, you could grow some native phlox (which tolerates poor soil).

or this aubrieta (unfortunate name)

Okay, I'll let GF handle the decisions.

That hill actually doesnt get good sun most of the year.  When it snowed, it stayed covered for like a week.  We were amazed.

I am going to go ahead and get started out there since mytime is so limited today.  I will try and capture some photos of whats going on with the sandstone and also the front yard.  Here is the last picture I took of the front, it's old.  a LOT more has been done up there.

That's a much better look at the front than I've seen before, recent or not.  Didn't realize the view across the street.  Yep, you need to keep working on that to improve drainage.

BTW, this rain is moving east faster than I realized.  Looks like you'll get it this morning.
