I think you can.  See that wire*?  That measures depth and speed, but we only use it when we are doing more technical survey type drilling, which also incorporates a sensor laden lead rod with wires running up the middle connected to a box truck of equipment with a little Vietnamese kid running it with an attitude.  

* nevermind, you cant see the wire, there is a wire that runs parrallel to the hammer and attaches to the ground.

It hammers like a jackhammer.  We usually run 4' sample sections, remember the acetate liner discussion?  BTW, chech got robbed on the price, those things aren't cheap, but they're more like a couple hundred bucks a box, not a foot.

When hooked to the sensor and truck with Vietnamese kid with an attitude it has PID, FID, and ECG.

When we are running it, it doesnt measure anything.

When I collect a sample I write a blurb about it, shove some of it in a bottle, and sniff it with a sniffer.
