 Birthday ballon with smiley

Helium balloon with a fishing line tied onto it?  Stand down wind, let the line out, let the wind blow it over the limb to the other side, then shoot the balloon with a BB gun?

How high are we talking about here any way?

Close to 70' I figure.
That gives you plenty of time to run if it starts falling.

Once the line is up against the limb, let the balloon go high enough so that there will be enough line to make it back to the ground when you pop the balloon.  Use a bright colored balloon so you can find it easier.  Part of it should still be on the end of the fishing line and serve as a flag to locate it.

I'm never worried if I can hear, but usually in that area I am on the tractor or running a chainsaw.  I think it's wedged in there pretty good, but it's coming down.  If I have to take the whole tree down.  I will not lose.

A good portion of the problem is having enough weight to come back to the ground.

Line will hang up in trees. Then we'll start a thread about getting monofilament down.

sling shot was also a fail, although I am considering water-balloon launcher.

BTW, windage is key.

A balloon should support some small lead fishing weights and still rise I would think, if the balloon is large enough.  For that matter, put 5 or 6 balloons together.  Let the balloons go way up in the air once the line is positioned right next to the limb.  That way it has plenty of slack line above the limb so that it can make it back to the ground somewhere.  It doesn't matter where it lands as long as one end is still on the fishing pole and the other end goes over the limb and is back on the ground somewhere where you can reach it.  Then tie a rope on the end of the line where the balloons where and use the fishing pole to reel the rope up over the limb and back down.

If you rig it so that you have too much weight for one balloon to lift, you can pop all of the balloons except one and then it will be pretty easy to find.  Then you can always shoot the last one if you need to.

No need. All it has to do is hit something and it will likely take out the top of the tree.

Be sure to get pics of your truck filled with balloons, on way home from party store.

Actually I would buy a pack of balloons and a little disposable party sized helium tank from Wal-mart and inflate them myself as needed.  I think those little tanks are about $20.  We buy them all the time for the kid's parties.  They are on the party aisle with the balloons and streamers.
