I hate to interfere with his excuse for buying an RC chopper if he really wants one.  Cheesy  He should probably try that first.

He was serious about that?

I Googled last night and could not find anything about how high any of them go. The best I could come up with was how well rated some were for lift, but could find nothing about top elevation on any of them.

Who wouldn't want an RC chopper?

Of course, if you accidentally hit a branch with the balloon you are out a couple of bucks maybe if it pops.  If you accidentally hit a branch with the rotor then you could be out $100 when the chopper crashes into the ground.

IDK if it is altitude, or the distance away from RC?

Yeah, range. I looked for that as well....nothing rated or mentioned about range either.

OK, I put my mad paint skillz to use.  The basic idea is to just use the balloon to lift a second line in to place.  Don't pop the balloon and hope it will fall back down on the other side of the branch.  The second line will be pretty heavy since it will be used to pull the rope and you don't want it to break (50lb test?).  I would go with the strongest one they have at Wal-mart if you don't already have a spool.  The main line can be just whatever you have in your rod and reel.  Tie the balloon on to the main line from the reel.  Allow it to go up 50 feet or so, however much you will need to clear the tops of the trees (height of tree - height of branch).  Now tie a loop in the line.  This loop will act as a pulley for the heavy line.  Thread the heavy line through the loop.  Then put some lead weight on it.  Make sure the loop is small enough that the lead can't come back through and fall out, but not tight because you want to be able to slide the heavy line up and down to guide it as needed.  Now let the balloon(s) and second line with the weight rise high enough to be above the dead branch.  Have the girl walk around and manipulate the heavy line so that it is on the opposite side of the dead branch from the boy.  Now she can let the line down to the ground and it will be across the branch.  Reel in the balloons.  Remove the weights and pull the heavy line out of the loop.  Tie the rope on to the heavy line and use it to pull the rope up over the branch.  If the branch is 70ft off the ground the rope will need to be at least 2 times that so that both ends can reach back to the ground.  Tie a loop in one end of the rope.  Leave the loop open so it doesn't create any friction.  Feed the other end through the loop and pull on it.  The loop will rise up to the branch.  Now it should be tight around the branch so you can pull it down (or break the rope).

You should be able to maneuver this rig somewhat if it isn't too windy.  The second heavy line acts as a tag line to help steer.  Assuming you have a fishing pole and line, all you need is enough helium balloons to lift some lead fishing weights.

Now it should be as clear as mud.  Cheesy

This would probably work, but you might be better off letting the dead branch fall on your head.  Cheesy
