So you have to "trip" back out of hole every joint drilled, in order to empty acetone sleeve?

We run rods down the casing to obtain the sample.  We have to trip those in and out, but the casing stays in the ground.

When I say casing, it can also be referred to as rods.  I used the word casing so it would be more clear how it works.  They arent "casing" in your typical sense and they come out when we're done.

Just for keeping hole from caving in around drill rods?

Also used to advance, the lead has shoe for the sampler.

To clear any confusion,  this is not the auger rig we are discussing.  This is the little track mounted direct push machine.

For the auger rig we would use split spoons and run then down the augers with rods.

Yeah, I was thinking core drilling.

Yeah, I was thinking core drilling.
We drill in 30' joints of pipe. WE trip out only (mostly) when bit is worn out. But with a core bit, I would imagine you'd have to trip out each time the core barrels get full. Huh?

Yep.  With a sonic rig we can do 20' runs, but the client usually wants 10' runs (less dangerous, supposedly better samples, but I disagree).  I dont have a sonic rig up here. Sad

The best the auger rig can do is 6' runs, but that's only with 10 1/4" augers.  With the 8 1/4's we are using, we can only do 2.5' sample runs.

BUT, for example the wells I have been drilling lately, we put a wooden plug in the lead auger and knock it out when we get to depth because we are not collecting samples.

As you know, we drill down in 30' joints of pipe. Drill one down, then add another, and so forth. But when we come out of hole, we "rack back" pipe in 90' "stands". Saves time of making and breaking connections.

Also every joint of pipe is measured (strapped) to the 1/10 of an inch.

In the old days we could hang the rods and augers on the side of the rig in 30' sections, but they dont let us anymore for safety reasons.  Basically our mast is useless.

Knock it out how? Wireline?

With the rods.  It's really easy, they can usually do it by just dropping the last 5'.

What is the OD on these rods, for say 8 1/4 bit?

So you are the "sampling/test" version of what the oil field calls the "Company man" and also the "mud logger"?

Essentially.  We have to be present during any subsurface activities, sometimes we are sampling and logging and running around like crazy, sometimes we do nearly nothing.
