  I can think of seventeen reasons not to go in the sugarcane field in the background.  Its in one foot increments..

On an average day you can find an alligator in a ditch beside a 7-11, south of I-10.

On an average day you can find an alligator in a ditch beside a 7-11, south of I-10.

Gators are fine, snakes that big no way.

Much better day today, no snakes or aligators, truck stealers, or rain.  And I got to play driller helper for a little while, since the helper had to go to a funeral.  Hard work, I liked it, would NOT want to do it everyday for whatever small sum they get.

Some rig companies have strict rules about DD running the rig, others don't. I think I have a better feel of what is happening downhole with my hand on the brake. I will sometimes make connections if the driller is away on a kelly down. I have, of course, worked the tongs if a roughneck is missing for a minute. But those guys work like farm animals, 12 hours a day, every day (7 or 14 in a row).

Crews are smaller on land, but offshore you have to be a roustabout before you get to roughneck. That entails 12 hours of chipping, painting, cleaning pipe threads, unloading boats. Imagine having to work your tail off for a year or two, just for the opportunity to roughneck.

True. Their training program. But weak guys never would last a week. I'll bet,--just guessing-- that drug tests or runaround girlfriends/wives get most of them.

I was in the company man's office, offshore, years ago. Middle of the night and I had my feet on his desk, watching the rig floor out the window. The drilling company had sent a guy out to do drug/urine test on their crew. A rig hand came in the offfice and picked up the entire box of samples. He shhhed me and took off with it down the hall. I peeked out the office door in time to see him throw the samples from the whole crew overboard. LOL

There is never a need to be anywhere a snake that big. Except for .... ummm, nevermind.
