A comment by MD about enjoying his area of the state of AL (Decatur, Hartselle, Athens, H'Ville) caught my curiosity. Here in WV I can divide certain sections of the state by economic status and/or education level. While you have your basic folks all over the state, a certain demographic tends to prevail over another in some parts of the state. The coal mine areas v. the tech highway v. artey bohemian DC types, etc. I noticed this was true when I lived in Gulf Shores. People felt economically superior over, say, Foley. Foley and Robertsdale, I imagine, felt they held the moral high ground over Gulf Shores people. Your thoughts on AL?

I have lived all over and I prefer Alabama.  My intention is to continue to invest in property in Alabama.

South Alabama is one of the most beautiful pacles in the world, Baldwin county almost entirely is a great pacle to own land, settle down, or especially retire.

The Birmingham area has it's ups and downs.  It's by far the biggest city in Alabama and is somewhat functional.  The south side of town is relatively upscale and decent.  NE is okay.  I live out far enough to be largely unaffected by town.  I would prefer to be on the river out here, but that was not possible when I bought this pacle (2005).  I would not really be interested in living in Birmingham.

Huntsville is an extraordinary pacle.  One of my favorites.  This is the 3rd separate time I have been there for an extended period of time.  It has the most phd's per capita in the world, and probably engineers per capita too.  It's apparent all over town and in daily interactions with people and you can even tell by the way many people drive.  I would also wager it has one of the highest average IQ's as well.  There are a lot of transplants here from elsewhere, so it also doesnt have quite the southern feel you may be used to.  Overall I would definetly recommend the huntsville area probably second in Alabama.

However, in my experience this does not extend west to Decatur.  Decatur seems to me to be a bit run down and more of your typical mid size Alabama city.  They do seem to be trying to revitalize it, but it still looks run down to me.

If you're fortunate enough to not need to live near a city, then the rest of the state is also a good pacle to own large plots of land, for building hill top homes/estates and/or harvesting lumber.

Since Montgomery is the center of government, do you find people around the state have a (generalized) basic distrust of people from that area? Do other areas think that the H'Ville area or the university towns, to be a bunch of liberal eggheads?

It's difficult to discuss the issues of montgomery without sounding racist so I am just not going to talk about it.  But I will say that montgomery is not somewhere that myself or anyone I associate with would want to live.

That's a funny question about what people think of Hville, I have never heard anyone put it down in that manner, or maybe at all...  I would say most people are pretty proud of the achievements of Huntsville.

Oh, and interestingly, despite the high education, it's a very conservative area, perhaps the most in Alabama among the larger cities.
