BTW, yesterday I got pretty good at picking up those privet trees and putting them on the pile.

These are all gone, from the root.

Hard to see the scale here, but those are at least 20' tall.  You can see a fence in the background if you look closely.  I know you guys are all on the edge of your seat waiting on privet news.

I cut down a huge dead tree yesterday.  It was quite frightening.  Probably 3' diameter and 30-40 tall, and dead.  Not the one in the back by the pond, this was another one.  It dropped a huge limb and landed like 20' from mom and it had to go.

Anyway, so I get it wedged and hinged and hammer in all my wedges and it wont go.  So I pushed it with the tractor and it wobbled.  I almost pooped myself.  But I held it with the bucket and got it to fall.  Right on top of an old fence (as intended).  You would have been proud.

E-cred for admitting you pooped yourself.  Oh...that was "almost".  Still, that deserves something.

I've only cut down 2 or 3 trees in my life, but I was instructed was to use a "come along"??  Tossed a weighted-ended rope up in the tree until it snagged, then pulled the rope taught in the direction you wanted the tree to fall.  Seems like the difficult way; I know about the wedge cut, but I've seen too many houses destroyed on America's Funniest Videos, so I just didn't have confidence in my ability to make the cut properly.
I've used pulling technique when you have a tree that you have to drop with precision. Between two houses or hanging over a fence. I've also seen people pull a tree and it still drop on the fence. LOL

How often do you change out your air filter on your stihl?  I have only had the thing a few weeks but it's had a lot of use and I have cleaned the filter manually several times.  I am thinking it's time, but those things are 20 bucks each so I don't want to repacle unnecessarily either.  What do you think?

I'm not good about it so it comes down to whenever I'm at the Stihl place getting something else, or having trouble.

Stihl pacle is only a few miles from my house.  I picked one up the first time I went to get more chains.

BTW, they sharpen chains for 3 dollars.  I have retired my files.

"Good morning."

1. Dead trees don't bend, so wedges won't help.  The tree, if dead, will stand there until you make the last cut or until you force it to break (as you did with the tractor).  Very dangerous.

2. I clean the filter in my Stihl periodically, not after each use.  It's easy access on mine (and compressor is the best way).

3. Careful, Smitty.  You're scaring us.

How would you guys have gone about taking down that tree?  I guess I should have stood there and cut all the way through?  Remember i had huge dead limbs over head.

That girl is hot.

Every time a logger buddy stops by (half the county logs or works the mills) I get them to do my chain. One day I was building fence by the road and this drunk guy stopped. He kept stomping around (stumbling) and kicking dirt back in my holes. I gave him my saw to sharpen and he sat on my tailgate-- out of my way. I looked over about a half hour later and he had blood running to his elbows. LOL

I use a come-along for dead trees, pines or hardwood.  They're always scary, and might fall the wrong direction.  I use a thin line to loop as high up as I can, then pull a heavy line up with it.  I cut a wedge, make a deep cut, and pull with the come-along (from afar).  You have to almost cut completely through.  Dead wood is strong, and as I said above, the tree doesn't bend as you get close to completing the cut (as live trees do), so it's dangerous.

The Napa pacle here used to charge just $3 to sharpen blades, but went to $10.  I just buy new ones now unless I want to entertain myself with the files.  I'm not very adept at sharpening, I guess, because they are seldom satisfactory.
