Well, I thought of a little problem.  I was just about ready to fill the hole with cement, then it occurred to me that this wet post is going to shrink a good 1/2 inch when it dries out in a couple of months.

Hmmm....  Thinking

I think I may fill it up with crusher run, or maybe just put the dirt back in there.  Thoughts?

Alright, I think I have engineered a solid solution here.  I am going to put a layer of cement in the bottom to serve as a footing.  This will spread the load over a larger area so the post doesn't continue to sink all the way to China once I put a treehouse on top of it.

Then I am going to put in a layer of gravel for drainage.  You don't want these posts sitting in standing water down in the bottom of that hole if you can help it.  It is rated for it, but if you can keep the water away the post should last longer.

Then I sit the post on top of the gravel.  Then fill in the hole with crusher run.  The crusher run packs very well and will help tremendously with lateral loads and racking.  The crusher run will also continue to pack in tight as the post dries and shrinks.

I saw a post on a construction message board where a guy said he had to replace one of his fence posts one time due to it breaking above the ground.  The post was cemented in the ground, but he said he popped it right out of the cement.  The cement stayed in the ground.

Whew!  I almost ruined a whole days work, not to mention a $40 post!  Thankfully it got dark on me before I could mix up the cement.

Good morning.
I'm heading up to Shenandoah National Park today, then into the mountains of West Virginia tomorrow.  If there's a fish in those streams, I'm after it.
I'll say a prayer for WV's family from a mountaintop today.

Good Morning!! I think your camera will get a chance at another great picture. It sounds like you've had another great summer with your travels, did you take your trip to the island again this year? Be safe and have a great time.

Thanks, Jamos.
Yes, I spent a few weeks on the island.  Here's a photo I made for Hannibal of a day's catch (barracuda twice):

Nice catch! I've had the chance to do a little bass fishing so far this year and had some success. Mrs J went with me recently and caught two nice spotted bass, 2.5 and 4 lbs., naturally she had to call everyone across America and tell them how she had kicked my tail.

Wow, those are big Spotted Bass (Kentucky Bass).  Those seem to pull harder than Largemouth Bass, but it may just be that they like colder water (and have more oxygen there).

Clearly you need more practice to stay ahead of your wife.  Start today!

I think it's better to let her have her fun. Wink
I wanted to go today, the water should be nice and cool from all of the rain we've had, but I was on the tractor and lawn mower all day yesterday and it kind of sapped me. Did you finish your project helping your neighbor/friend rebuild?

Zimmerman not guilty. I don't know if he did it or not. My question is why the media made this into the trail of the century? This type of thing happens everyday in Miami.

Not only in Miami, it happens every day across the nation, black on black.

Well those ladies on that jury did an honorable job. They stood by the truth. The media got in this so they could cause a war between the people of this nation. Praise GOD it didn't happen. RTR!

My thinking exactly. Also, isn't it funny how many people on various TV, radio, and Internet forums now have law degrees?

When they broke the news of the jury's decision last night, I honestly believe the news media was trying to instigate riot activity. Thank God their plan didn't work.  Banging your head against the wall.

Not much progress on the treehouse today.  Every time I get the tools out it starts raining.  Then shortly after I pick everything up it stops.

Maybe you need to build the roof first so you don't get wet working on the lower part of it.
