Several truisms:

1. It's a big ocean.

2. Planes aren't boats.

3. It's difficult to see debris or people among whitecaps.

I spent numerous long nights searching for missing boats off Dauphin Island during the 1970s.  Usually they were just late.  Even when still floating, they were difficult to find.  Once they sink, often there aren't many indications on the surface.

And planes aren't boats.

Last summer I read "Unbroken".  Great book.

But, but seat cushions are flotation devices. Wouldn't they be scattered about?

JK. I hear what you're saying. Especially if the pilot laid it down softly. I just can't wrap my head around no distress call by the pilot unless he was held at gunpoint, or the plane was in the control of a terrorist.

Cushions and such are small.  Every whitecap leaves a white-foam spread that is larger.

There is no such thing as a "pilot laid it down softly" episode of a 777 in the ocean.  Even small planes are VERY difficult to land on the ocean without catastrophic tumbling.

Besides, likely the plane broke up from an explosion or structural failure.  That plane can cruise at over 500 mph.  Imagine what happens at that speed if a wing comes off.

I don't know, but there are 1000 scenarios that could account for the disappearance.  The searchers should find a debris field today.  That may be all that's left on the surface.

It is a big ocean but it is also a big plane. There are a lot of items that would float. The passenger cabin walls and overhead bins are plastic. Seat cushions, papers, luggage, etc. It is hard to believe in a massive search nothing has been found other than oil.

The size of the debris field will help determine the cause. If it is a massive field with small parts scattered everywhere that would indicate a mid air explosion or catastrophic effect. A tighter debris field would lead you to believe the plane when down into the water in flight World Trade Center style. No distress call almost certainly excludes the pilot fighting to keep the plane from crashing.

My wife, who watches too many James Bond movies, thinks it is possible that the plane was hijacked and has flown to a remote location without a trace on the radar.

The four most recent updates from Yahoo! Malaysia...

UPDATE [9:44pm]: A Vietnam rescue plane has detected two objects that look like debris, Vietnamese rescue authorities announced at around 9pm.  The crew of the DHC-6 plane saw the debris but could not see any marks or identifiable signs.

Maritime Rescue boats are around location, which is within the search area, some 80km South-South West of Tho Chu islet.

UPDATE [8:35pm]: Malaysian authorities hold press conference, but stonewall most media questions. Questions they dodged include:
1) Was there a security lapse? Who is Malaysia Airlines' insurer?
2) What possibilities and angles are you looking at?
3) Did the passengers traveling on stolen passports look like they were German or Italian?

They also confirmed that:
1) Search radius increased from 20 nautical miles to 50 nautical miles
2) Countries assisting in the search include: Vietnam, China, Singapore, United States, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines.
3) Australia sending support as well.
4) Air search to take place between 7am and 7pm. Naval search goes on round the clock.
5) Malaysia also searching in the Straits of Malacca due to reports that MH370 turned back.
6) No signal from the plane's Emergency Locator Transmittor (ELT).
7) Altogether, 34 aircraft and 40 ships involved in search for MH370.

UPDATE [8:02pm]: Night falls, still no sign of flight MH370. Transport Minister Hishamuddin Hussein says authorities can't confirm anything yet. Full story here.

UPDATE [7:37pm]: The United States has sent two naval ships and an aircraft equipped with long-range radar to help in the search for MH370. Full story here.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Najib Razak says the government will review all security protocol at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and will improve security measures if necessary. Full story here.

Good Monday morning! Got the pool swim ready yesterday, hoping that will keep spring around. More than likely will just prolong winter, though. I hope everybody has a great day!

I'll notify Chaac.

Morning all, and happy Monday!

You know it's Monday when translating Hebrew you're supposed to write "the poor men" but you write "the poop men" instead.

It is amazing to me they still have not found any evidence of the plane crash. The plane just disappeared off the radar. Bermuda Triangle?

Looks like it's pretty quiet in the neighborhood, this morning. More rain on the way here, so what's new. It was 77 here yesterday, but another cool down is coming. Spring is struggling, but it will eventually break through.

Y'all have a nice day!
