Crap, hook echo on the radar near us.  Hunkerdown time.

At least the wireless works.  Silver up to $42.58 this AM; I'm rich !!  Tongue

"Very good, very good." [Silver pun]

I was off air for a few minutes.  Wireless works on battery; hub needs power.  Yep, it's a good storm, mostly cloud-to-cloud lightning, though.  Temperature has dropped to 60 degrees now (10-degree drop).

So, Smitty is going to give us the A-Day report?  I have to work.   Applause E-Cred to you both.

Mornin' all. Interesting Pine story: While in the Everglades a few years back, our guide told us the story about Australian pines being planted around homes in South Fl. hundreds of years ago because they grew tall and were very flexible and protected homes from hurricane force winds. What they didn't know at the time of planting was that their pine needles were so acidic that it killed everything it touched, so nothing else grew anywhere near them. After recess, we'll talk about the strangler fig.

I know both of those stories.  Casuarina (Aus Pines) planted all over the Caribbean and Pacific Islands too.  Strangler figs are a great story.  Plenty in Central and South America, bizarre life history - plus lots of fruit for critters.

Gotta go to work.  Morning, 2.

Chech, since you seem to know you botany,  What would be a good tree or plant that I could raise here and sell as a side business?  Preferably something clone-able (and legal).

What if people could come here and walk around and order clones of whatever they want, out of hundreds of tree types?  Or better to focus on two or three?

Chech, since you seem to know you botany,  What would be a good tree or plant that I could raise here and sell as a side business?  Preferably something clone-able (and legal).

Two things come to mind, but neither can be cloned (easily).

1. Any of the evergreens that grow fast and work well as border plants.  With your machinery, and the clients who will want border plants to block views, I think you could make money buying small and growing the cedars and junipers.  Not the native cedars, but the ornamental ones.  There are several varieties that do well and grow fast.  Check the local garden centers in your area.

2. Christmas trees.  If you have the room, and if there are no nearby Christmas-tree farms, there's plenty of $$ to be made raising those.  All the info you need is on the web.

I'd avoid the temptation to raise trees, like oaks or maples.  They take too long to grow and don't transplant easily.  More likely your clients will want a nice border of evergreens.

edit: talk with the local Aub about options and varieties, but your "white cedar" (Thuja you just got) is my favorite.

Clones of trees is a dream.  It's easy to clone small perennials, but not trees (sensu Toomer's).  Plant a variety for your enjoyment.  Make your money transporting (and planting) big trees from garden centers.  You have the equipment for that.  Learn the details.  Money to be made.

ssmithgeneral: You said you wanted some variety in the trees you plant. When I moved to Oxford, AL I had a large yard but only about 4 trees in the entire yard. I had a black cherry and three pecan trees. I didn't know much about trees, so I went to Lowes (1994?) and started talking to people. I wanted some nice trees for shade and I wanted a diverse collection. I planted a Bradford Pear (they had just gotten popular), a red maple, silver maple, pin oak, and a sycamore tree. I don't live there anymore but it has a beautiful array of trees now, placed around the yard to give it a very shady and comfortable look. It's a great feeling to see something you planted to grow to such beauty. Of course, the sycamore and pin oak are still growing, but they're at least 35-40 feet now.

If it's genetically possible to clone them, then I can clone them.  We only have one nursery in PC and it sucks

Morning. I have nothing to add on the tree topic. I think I know the difference between a pine tree and an oak tree, but even that is a little hazy for me.  Huh?

I know a guy who combined his landscaping business with a nursery. Trees, shrubs, etc. You can buy bundles of trees (16" saplings) for cheap out of the catalogs, if you are patient. He keeps rows mowed so people can walk around, and a supply of burlap (with a can of nails for pins), but that is about all in the way of labor.

I bought 30 Dwarf Alberta Spruce after Christmas one year for $5 a pop.

In a few years they turn into

Which goes for $70-100.

That's 7(a-b) -3bx30 in profit. You need to spray them each spring for spider mites.

You can always spot a Toomer Oak, distinguishable by the number of a-holes standing around them.

My wife just cut to major, big Cedar trees in our yard. They were filling our house with Pollen. So they had to go. RTR!
