Some things are more important than A-Day.  Not many, but some.  Cheesy

that's what I'm thinking and plus I'm waiting on the replay so maybe this time I can
see it uninterrupted  ....

Only down side I saw was the QB play.  Our "backup All America" (AJ) of last year is still not ready for prime time.  Neither of them looked ready yet.  What say you?

From what I saw today I like Phil Sims. I am sure Coach Saban will be calling me tomorrow to get my opinion.

I agree on the QB play.  I have to tuck the kids in.  I will come back to elaborate in a few minutes.

You're in the gene pool??

Scary isn't it?  Cheesy

JMO, not quoting anyone, but it seems the position is kind of McCarron's to lose, all other things being sort of equal. His limited game experience last year, is still a big advantage in the "ARMS" race.

Before spring practice I thought we'd carry both QBs into the fall, more to protect the backup from defecting than to play two.  But now it looks like playing 2 is a likelihood, with Blake Sims also in the mix for goal-line situations.  I think we'll travel to Penn State without Coach Pa (he wouldn't know anyhow) the PSU Offensive Coordinator knowing who will start.  BUT CNS will know by then.

I agree with pmull.  I think P Sims did a little better.  He had some mistakes due to lack of experience, but those can be overcome in time.  I noticed that he seemed to stare down his primary receiver.  He would check down and look for other guys if the primary wasn't open, but if the main guy was open he never looked away to keep the DB's honest.  It also looked like he wasn't used to the speed of the college game yet.  But all of those things will come in time.  The interception he through was because he was late on the stop route, just like hscoach pointed out a couple of weeks ago after watching some practice video.  I would also say that he seemed to do a better job of trying to play within the system and not try to take it upon himself to try and win the game alone.

For AJ, it seemed like he tried to force several balls into good coverage.  This is typical for him though, and in my opinion is the primary reason he won't win the starting job.  He wants to do too much.  When you have a guy like Trent running the ball and running short routes out of the backfield you don't need to force the ball deep all the time.  If the play isn't there, dump it off to Trent and live to play the next down.  Besides a 5 yard pass to Trent probably has as good a chance of going all the way as a 50 yard pass to Hanks or Maze.  He did have several nice plays were he did just that and they moved the chains pretty well.  I guess he played pretty well in the first half for the most part, but when they moved him over to the 2's it seemed like he tried to do a little too much.

There wasn't a lot of difference between the two in my opinion.  So in my book that is advantage Sims.  If they are basically the same, give the young guy the reps since he has more eligibility.  The extra reps will help him improve on his weaknesses and he should improve and pull ahead.  Then you have a solid guy at QB for several years.  I think AJ just takes too many chances and it will be hard to coach him into playing more conservatively.  If I had to pick a starter today, I would go with Sims.

We will have to agree to disagree. I think CNS is adamantly opposed to a 2 QB system and we will use the early part of the opener to enhance the winner's development and confidence. Both QBs were asked to do much more today in the way of pass heavy offense against a D that is expecting a pass heavy O, than they will in the regular season. BTW, SC made a point in the in-game thread today about Sims staring down his receivers. I watched the 1st half replay after reading that, and made a point of watching-- it is something Sims will have to overcome.

Coach had the same good point (about Sims staring).
We don't disagree as much as you suggest.  I mean we will carry both into game 2, because CNS wants both to stay with the team.  We might need both before the year ends, and he won't reveal the starter until game 2.

Good assessment.  Well said.  But I don't think CNS knows yet.  He might well draw the same conclusion and select Sims, but there's much more into the decision than ability.  It'll be September before we know his decision.

Good observations SC.

AJ has spent more time with the 1st team than Sims and AJ has more experience. Therfore, he should be ahead of Sims at this point. I don't see it. Sims looks good in the pocket and seems to make good decisions. He is young. He will get better. Sims was late on a few throws but that can be worked out this summer. He made some very nice throws in traffic. I like the quick release and volocity on his throws. Sims is also bigger and looks more durable to me. Can McCarron take a hit?

AJ seems to throw the ball up for grabs too much for me.

I agree that it isn't settled yet for sure.  I only meant that if we were playing Penn St next Sat, I would go with Sims based on what I saw today.
