I have a weeping willow in the front yard I want to move also.

This species is more forgiving than an apple, but you're a month late deciding to move it.  Sooner the better if you must.  It'll be hard to keep alive too, depending on obvious factors.

That project can wait.  Best to move trees in the winter/early spring?

After they drop leaves.  Winter.

Less stress while they get established. Also mound dirt in your planting hole to support the trunk. Good loose soil around the edges of your hole, allowing it to spread while preventing the roots from spreading in a circular fashion. No air holes.

"Winter is considered the ideal season for tree planting in Alabama.    During winter months, trees are dormant and transplanting shock is greatly reduced due to leaf fall and reduced photosynthesis and water requirements."

Palms:
BIRMINGHAM PALMETTO
Hardiness: To around 0°F. An established plant in Oklahoma survived subzero temperatures in 1996. It may turn out to be the world's most cold-hardy trunking palm.

WINDMILL PALM
Hardiness: Zone 7b (5°F) and in Zone 7a (0°F) with protection. Unhappy in Zone 9 and hotter in the Southeast.
Description: An fast and easy-to-grow palm tree reaching 20 feet or so in the Southeast. The slender trunk is covered with a burlap-like fiber. Grows well even in clay

PALMETTO OR CABBAGE PALM
Hardiness: Zone 8a (10°F), Zone 7b (5°F) with protection or good siting.
A common Southeastern palm tree maturing at 40 feet or more.

JELLY PALM OR PINDO PALM
Hardiness: Zone 8 (10°F) with some damage occurring at about 15°F. Needs protection in Zone 7b when temperatures drop below 15°F.
Description: Lovely palm tree with silvery-green feathery fronds, a stout trunk. Beautiful blossoms and tasty and aromatic orange fruit are bonuses. Grows from 20 to 30 feet tall. Looks best in full sun.

Good Morning    Wink

Good morning, YP.  The tree that Smitty has is the one listed above as Cabbage Palm.  Usually it's called Sabal Palm (sells better).  These names are a bit misleading, because there are so many common names for palms (and they are so difficult to identify).

Thanks for the post.  Time for watching the spring game (ESPNU at 8AM).  RTR.

Having a lot of conversation with the versar dude today.  If they win the project we are on the contract.  This is potentially huge.  He wants two.  Which means I can hire the girl (she's a hyrdogeologist).  Dont worry 2.  I already have a guy in mind that can drive the tractor in my absence if I am running around the coast for a while.

Thanks.  He's just a desperate department manager who has dragged his butt on a proposal that is due out tomorrow.  That's what's going on.  But I am having my 'staff' assist him with it, and in the off chance we win it, I will be set for a while.

I did lots of contract work during the 1990s.  Those guys (like the one at Versar) are asked to send in proposals to every contract RFP that comes from the feds.  They've got to respond with a proposal, plus line up contractors to do the work.  Unless they've "got an in" with the contracting officer, their chances are slim at getting a contract.  It's a stupid system (the fed one) that favors small businesses, woman-owned businesses, etc.  I qualified as a small business (just me).  Dumb, huh?

Trent with 167 all-purpose. I could QB that team. Hand off to Trent. Hand off to Trent. Throw deep to Mays (if not there, dump off in flats to Trent). Repeat. Cool
