While we are on the water hose subject:

I had my culvert, 40' corrugated steel running under the drive entrance, plugged up. I ended up donating $ to the VFD to bring the water truck to avail of the high pressure. But since, I have been trying to think of a 1-2-3 quick way to clean out culverts. You can drive around and see where mud and gravel have washed across the road after storms to spot potential customers. The alternative is to dig them up and shake them out, which normally leads to damage, let alone the huge inconvenience.

Did the fire truck work?  If so, water source + big *** trash pump with a good nozzle.  Or, you could invent a pressure washer on a stick.  In our business they call it mucking out a well.  but it's just a pressure washer they can stick down in there.

We also have this crap called air knifing, it's for clearing utilities around dispensers and such.  It's just a strong air compressor and vac truck all in one, you work the wand into the dirt and the air breaks it up and the vac truck sucks it in.

The water truck had to go back and refill (another donation). So not a great solution. But I was trying to come up with a plan that did not involve spending much money. Everything I've come up with to make a 1/2 hour job out of proved ineffective or potentially damaging to the culvert. Food for thought.

What if you could get a small steel snake through, use it to pull a chain through, and the pull a pig through with a tractor?

What if you have a horizontal auger that was small and could attach to the pto.  Same thing, back it through, hook up a pig and pull it out.  No?

Or maybe not an auger, what about those things the gas line guys use to shoot under stuff?

Good idea, as was the fire hose.
Just curious, was this a slumping of the driveway (collapsing onto the culvert) or an erosion problem upstream.  Guess I'm more into solving the source problem.

These culverts fill up with silt, gravel, leaves and such. During big storms the right of way ditch fills with water and flows across the road. The integrity of the culvert itself is usually tip-top. I've thought of dragging a chain with a ball on the end with the truck, but thought it would pull up the culvert on the pulling end. Also, to pull straight through, you would need your truck/tractor at  the level of ditch, not road level. I hope that is clear?

yeah, I can picture it.

what if you did it with a come along or wench using a pulley or something to level it?  You would still have to get something heavy in the ditch unless you could hang it from the back of the truck/tractor?

You put a winch on a home made 3pt attachment that you can lower from your tractor.  You back up to oneside of the culvert and lower it to level.

Or you just rent a backhoe and pull it with the bucket from on top of the driveway.

Watch the video: "Culvert Cleanout."  They must have something for big ones too.

These suggestions must all come from Aubs.  I think they're serious:

Example: Would an oil barrel fit inside ? If you fill the barrel with water, it will have some compression strength, hopefully enough to pull the dirt out.
