Good morning, all.  Home for a day, then back on the road.  Coffee

It's a cool, foggy morning here in Mississippi.  At least the rain is gone.

There was a red tide and fish kill along the Mississippi and Alabama coast.  We saw dead menhadden, bluegill, bass, mullet, and catfish.  Many fish were at the surface stressed.  Even gar were dying, and some had their beaks sticking out of the water.

Such a beautiful day on the water that you'd never suspect a red tide!

I hadn't heard about the red tide. I don't think it extended as far as us here in P'cola. Unlike the popular Crimson Tide, nobody likes a red tide.

It's still raining here this morning, but should stop in a couple of hours, then it will start turning cooler here, too.

We will be traveling also, on Saturday, heading to Lafayette, La to do Christmas with my youngest daughter and her husband. Looking forward to some Cajun food and fried turkey!
 Tongue

To Chech and everyone, who will be traveling over the holidays; safe travels!

Either I have been too busy with work, or I had my head in the sand. That's quite an outbreak.

we monitor the o2 levels in the area religiously , water temps , dissolved oxygen levels will tell you
a lot about whats going on and going to happen .
maybe one day we can visit and hook up with some friends at the DISL and have a brew or three
you will be surprised how much this stuff has to do with a successful or a crappy trip once you understand it
one of my good friends is the one that closes all the seasons when crap like this happens
he is a good source too LoL !

I can't go near the water when this chit happens , so I must pay attention  Banging your head against the wall.

ever hear that 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish ? it matters ...

on up in the bay we have this .... Click here for link

Quote
Alison Robertson, who specializes in harmful algal blooms with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, said she had ruled out red tide, which is caused by an organism called Karenia brevis, in the bay. The red tide algae prefers the high salinity found in the Gulf of Mexico. It does not do well in lower salinity, particularly the low levels of salt measured in the AL.com sampling.

Robertson said she had received numerous reports of dead fish from locations all around the bay. She is working to isolate the algae causing the problem.

"Along the Gulf coast, Destin to Dauphin Island, we have had many fish kills over the past 7 weeks that we have shown were associated with Karenia (red tide) blooms offshore," Robertson said. The toxins associated with red tide were found in the guts and flesh of fish from those kills.

"The fish kills being seen in and around Mobile Bay at the moment are inconsistent with that, and there are in many cases none or at least very low numbers of Karenia in the Bay waters that we have tested alongside affected fish," Robertson said. "Lots of small menhaden are being reported in many areas -- from Weeks Bay to Fairhope, to Fowl River -- exhibiting spiraled swimming or swimming sideways. We tested dissolved oxygen in over 26 sites over the past 2 days and everything looks great, levels between 7-10 mg/L which is exactly what we would expect based on the water temperature."

You can expand the map into Mississippi Sound and up into the bayous too.  We were in the Pascagoula River, and it's killing fish there (Tuesday was the day).

I'll join you for a beer at DISL, one of my favorite stomping grounds.  In Louisiana my expertise was low-oxygen water and its effects on critters.  I can add my two-cents worth.

Now you've done it.  I want to go fishing!!
