I didn't take time to find a California-beach pic.  Probably too risque anyhow.

Photos of hippies walking around in the mud silty-clay looking for a place to pee Port-O-Let (not yet invented) are funny.

Speaking of unwanted critters in the pool.  If they go in, they cant get out.  So we'll know.  I expect a few bunnies.  I have all the rabbits around here you can shake a stick at*.

So how can I develop a diverse eco system down there.  What about some koi?

Quote
Your raccoons would probably appreciate some fish in there.  First thing: Gambusia (mosquito fish).  You might have to net some from a creek or pond elsewhere, but you'll need them to keep down the mosquitoes.

Most of the critters will find their way into the pond by themselves.  You can add whatever fish you want, but they'll overpopulate and eat everything in the pond if you add sunfish (bluegills, etc), bass, or crappie.

Gambusia?  Usually not sold at stores.  They're pretty plain looking.  But they occur widely in creeks and ponds.
Frogs usually eat things bigger than mosqitoes; sometimes the wigglers as they emerge, but seldom the adults.  You'll need and appreciate Gambusia (which multiply fast and the constant populations of mosquitoes keep them fed (i.e., no maintenance).

A log?  I'd make a rock island or something cool like that.  You'll soon have turtles too.

The raccoons will show up, I'd guess.  Surprised they haven't yet.

I figured buying some of them would be cheaper than buying a net, and definitely easier.

Rock island is a good idea, maybe just spread some on the "beach" there or something.

Is there something that will climb the walls (plant)?

You might be able to buy Gambusia; I've just never searched.  Google.

All of those wetland plants can grow on the wall.  But I'm surprised you didn't terrace it or something.  Is it too late?  Any kid that falls in makes you ...

Can you terrace or lower the front lip (toward the gardens)?  You'll want easy access yourself anyhow.  You will need to walk in (with hip boots) to build the island and plant the weeds wetland plants.  Most of those plants you can just dig from a wetland near you.  Look up meadow beauty so you can recognize them.  They're blooming now, and you should be able to find plenty of it along farm-pond edges.  Check out a farm nearby and walk the pond edges for plants to transplant.  Just take a shovel-load at a time and plant the whole scoop.  That is, IF you have a pleasant farmer nearby.

I have a low area I can look in.

Not sure how I would terrace it.  We dont have any kids around here.  remember it's been like that for at least 5 years.  Nothing is different except I cleaned it out some.  I would consider a rail maybe.

BTW, buy a net.  You'll want one when you visit the farm pond anyhow.  You can probably net your own fish there.

You'll also want one for your own pond.

*** Important: get one with fine mesh (twice the mesh size of window screen or smaller); about 0.5 - 1.0 mm.
