Crazy kids.  I'm going to bed.  Maybe my garage door will get fixed soon.  If not I'll be tempted to try to spring-bash my head like an idiot.

My best recollection is that a 18-24" stilson, holding back up slipped. The other stilson smashed my hand. Evil spring.

Maybe it was because my sisters had two springs and I only repacled one?  I seriously only remember thinking how easy it was when I was done...

Anyway, my carport doesnt have that issue.  Night all

Either of you old enough to remember jumping off the Alabama Point bridge?

unfortunately yes ... thinking back ...  how dumb was that to do  ?

Big Dog use to pull a big ole tube everyday around to about where the Pink Pony is .
it was like a big water trampoline and he charged people to jump on it ...

I can remember girls being around his place all the time the gray hair not so much .
Not the same guy. This couple rented Wave Runners between the Holiday Inn and the Pony. Also sometimes on the Lagoon. I used his Wave Runner to chase down my sailboats if tourist went out of sight or tumped over.

probably not the same guy ...
but he did rent jet skis over on the beach too , he mostly just kept them over on the lagoon
I believe he made a deal with Mrs. Callaway to use her pacle on the lagoon to keep his stuff at.

I can't remember his real name , I think it might be Gary , not sure though , I'll ask my FIL
they were pretty good friends back then .
I remember talking to him several times and we use to joke about the big shark that made a
home at the gulf end of the lagoon pass and all the people swimming right there off the beach .
the shark was only yards away from them and they never knew ... it was a 1985 - 2005 timeline .

Yeah pretty much, the meeting was in Decatur.  Yes I saw where the tornado crossed the highway, looked just like you would expect.  I did not see any damage up in Decatur.

My oilfield buddy was also a pilot. Did aerial advertising in GS. I'd fly with him sometimes. You can see the sharks, swimming in and out of the swimming areas, from the sky. They don't bother anyone. If you get bitten, it was because a shark was swimming along and accidently got your arm stuck in his mouth.

So, if you're not busy, come over and repacle my garage spring.  If I could buy one I might try it myself (which would be stupid).

I'm trying to remember exactly, but I am pretty sure I just removed the broken one, put the new one in loose, and then lowered the door to tension it, tighten, raise door, repeat.  I think I did it twice.  It was probably 10 years ago.

I read a long explanation of how to do it (on the web).  It says you put it on with the door down.  I couldn't put mine own with it up anyhow; no room between the ceiling and the door to work.  You have to wind it up to the appropriate tension and tighten the set screws.

From the web:
Quote
You might be thinking: Aha! Why don't we lift the door, clamp it in place, and install the springs while they are thus safely unwound, rather than deal with all that accumulation of hazardous torque? The answer: At the top-of-travel, the unwound springs are not fully relaxed; they are still clamped to the torsion shaft with a significant stretch along the shaft axis, plus about a half-turn to keep the door snug at the top. This extra length amounts to the stacking of extra turns that accumulate from winding, also termed "spring growth" in the business. In my case this is about 7 turns of 0.2253 wire, or about 2 inches. Stretching the spring that much and clamping it with a half-turn or so of twist is not feasible.

meh, they just dont want people taking away their 10 minute job.  That issue is easily solved with a little manhandling.

Does your door have 2 springs or just the one?
