Smitty, people plant sod during all seasons.  You'll have to baby it if you plant it during summer (daily water, etc).  Just that the best time is now.  Fall plantings can have winter kill if severe winter.

RR Depot

We have a scenic rr a few miles away. A lot of locals have worked there all their working life. They collect all kinds of rr memorabilia. Number plates from engines a hot item. Steam whistles. I have some old switch locks and other items. I've driven the trains around in the yard. Coal fired, steam driven Shay engines from the logging era.

I like trains.  Especially old steam engines.
These are geared for 15-17% grades. They work harder now. They carry tourist up the mountain and back, but in old days just had a load coming off the mountain. I've filled in as brakeman when someone did not show up for work. They have air brakes but they still use the mechanical brakes for the "old time" effect.

Hmm, I was toying with the idea of going ahead and installing a sprinkler system.

Fun.

My dad was a train mechanic on the diesels but he loved old trains too so I grew up knowing about them.  Something really fascinating about those old steam engines.

Now would be the time. A well watered lawn grows faster. Too much HGTV?

I think I have a retirement job for you.  Ecuador has a harrowing "Devil's Nose Train Ride" (Nariz del Diablo) down the mountains in eastern Ecuador.  Cheap seats are on top.  Dress for the cold.

They need a good, experienced brakeman.

LoL, not in this instance, I just know it would be super easy right now.  Definitely wont happen this weekend, so ...  We'll see.  Not worried about it much.  I still like to see where the water runs when it rains and rework it a little.  When I am done, it should drain off right after big rains.  :crossingfingers:

For bermuda grass, probably not worth it.  The idea of a sprinkler is great, but the plumbing and control valves, etc are a pain.  My neighbor has one, I don't.  Depends on your soil, but bermuda is tolerant of dry conditions, once established.

Back when, brakeman was extremely dangerous. Hopping log cars (flat beds) from car-to-car to set and release brakes. BTW, these trains need a fire for 15-20 hours to heat water to steam. So they continuously "fire" the engines (hostler) overnight.

What, you don't do Ecuador either?  It's not Central America.
