So you are the "sampling/test" version of what the oil field calls the "Company man" and also the "mud logger"?

Essentially.  We have to be present during any subsurface activities, sometimes we are sampling and logging and running around like crazy, sometimes we do nearly nothing.
The oil field "Company Man" is virtually a go between. I tell him what to say in his morning report. If I need something or a decision needs to be made, our guys explain it as carefully as possible, then he calls Houston, or NOLA, OKC, or wherever the Superintendent is located to get them to make the call. In fairness, the CM knows a little about every aspect of the drilling process.

LoL

So does he actually do anything?

Me and the driller talk about what's going on, but other than that it's all our call.

1. Call in AM report
2. Go to lunch with bit salesman
3. Walk up to drill floor once or twice a week
4. Go to dinner with bit salesman

There are many company men (the oil company rep on location) that I think the world of and remain friends. Some have been around drilling all their life, and others got the job because their bro-in-law was high enough up the chain. Our guys can tell which guy is which in about 5 minutes.

Similar here, except there arent many geologists, so it's more is he new or not and does he understand the process.

I've had my head wrapped around this for a few years now so the drillers typically heart me.  I get it.

One of my favorite quotes that I pretty much made up is "I am a geologist, I am aware that 2 + 2 is not always effing 4"

Just got a pic from a friend in Vacherie LA.  It may not be native to bayou county, but it sure as hell knows when to leave the swampland.
