I was hot here the last couple days. I sweated out beer I drank back in January. Maybe 88

That's right, you have no AC.   Shocked
We're on the back porch, ceiling fans already off, house is comfortable, upstairs still hot.

Window units are very affordable.  I bet you'd like your office cool.
That room gets hot. Afternoon sun. I pull the drapes, run a box fan. It's ok--not miserable-- hot by mid afternoon til 6pm

Just dont screw it in, you can remove it after summer is over.
I don't even have to ask. The woman won't allow it. Asthetics.

They're more expensive, but they make "portable" ones that dont require the unsightly unit hanging out the window.
Each summer I get to post/boast about no AC. If I get a window/portable, next year I'll have an asterisk. It is only 4,5,6, days a summer that we wish we had AC. Of course there was the supermoon,--things COULD get bad.

Reminder, today was June 1st.  3 weeks until summer.

Garden planting starts in full tomorrow. Plants on patio waiting to go. This warm spell helps a lot. If the ground temperature is too cool, the plants will just sit there. Something about, "If you can sit on the ground without your pants..."

Any of you guys know anything about heat pumps?  I have no AC right now.  The problem is with the outside unit.  The compressor comes on but the fan would slow down and stop after a few minutes.  I checked the fan and it was hard to turn.  I went out and bought a replacement fan motor and capacitor.  I installed it.  It spins much easier.  But it still stops after a little while.

There is a defrost cycle built into the circuit board that will stop the fan motor when it gets below 32 degrees to heat the outside coils up to melt the ice.  I thought the control board might be bad, so I bypassed the defrost cycle.  From studying the wiring diagram, I believe that there isn't anything else in the way that could be turning the fan off.  It is on the same solenoid with the compressor, so if the compressor is running the fan should be too.  It seems like it has to be a bad capacitor to me, even though I bought it new yesterday.  Any thoughts?  Is there something else that could be causing the fan to kick off after a few minutes?

If I could just figure out how to make that darn fan spin I can have AC.  I even put all of my box fans out there last night blowing in from each side with a really strong fan laying on top blowing up.  This actually worked great and it cooled the house down.  I just need something to pull air through the cooling fins and everything else seems to be working.  I am going to try to find my digital multi-meter tomorrow and test the capacitor.  I believe it has to be a bad fan motor or a bad capacitor, and both of them are brand new.  Is there anything else I should check?

Thanks.

The only thing I know about heat pumps is that they suck.  They are not designed for areas of high humidity.  They cannot keep you cool in Alabama.  I had an apartment once that had one, it was miserable.  Sorry for the bad news.

Sorry about your problem SC. I hope you can get it fixed quickly. It is HOT this week.

I told you guys I had a new heating and cooling unit put in two weeks ago. It is a split unit with gas furance. After much work on the internet I went with a Rheem unit. My old Carrier unit was cooling but having trouble keeping up on hot days. It was 19 years old. I struggled making a decision because it is a big investment. So far it has been great. It is like the North Pole in my house. My old unit ran from daylight until about 2:00AM nonstop trying to cool my house. The new unit kicks on and off during the day like it should. I am told I can expect lower power and gas bills with the more efficent unit. So far I am very pleased.

Hey SC it sounds like the Thermostat is telling the fan to turn off to quick. I know from your talk you know about reading one-diagrams but sometimes Those stats can be a big head-ache. JMHO after 33 years in electrical work. Good luck. RTR!

First.

I agree, it came with the house.  The whole house is only about 5 years old.  I called out the local repair guys last year to fix it and they said it was still under warranty.  They replaced the compressor twice.  But under warranty was for parts only, they still got me for about $500 for labor the first time.  They get the parts for free from the manufacturer, so warranty work like that is a good source of revenue for those guys.  Sad  The second time was under "their" warranty a few months later, so I made them fix it for free.  Then it started acting up again right toward the end of summer.

I would be happy to pay someone to fix it, if it would stay fixed.  I am hoping to patch it up and make it run for a few more years.  The reason the compressor went out twice last year is because the fan motor was burnt out and couldn't spin fast enough.  This caused the compressor to have to run constantly to keep the house cool.  It also caused it to overheat since there wasn't sufficient air flow going through the inside to cool it off.  I was out of town on business a lot lost year, but my wife told me and those guys that the fan sounded bad and would stop several minutes before the unit shut off.  But they didn't listen.

So now I don't trust those guys to actually fix the problem, which is why I decided to take matters into my own hands.  I am not going to pay those clowns several hundred dollars ever few months to come out and fix something "under warranty".  They have no motivation to actually fix it when they can bleed me like that.  There aren't very many HVAC guys around here to choose from, and I won't trust any of them unless I get several glowing recommendations from people I know who are satisfied customers.

Thanks Ricky, I thought of that as well.  I am still suspicious of the thermostat.  But I checked the wiring diagram and there doesn't appear to be any signal from the thermostat to turn on the particular fan.  It should be on if the compressor is on, and the compressor works fine.  The thermostat does control the fan in the duct work that blows the air through the air handler.  But this is the big fan on top of the outside unit that draws the air through the condenser coils to cool the refrigerant.

Let me go find my multi-meter and I will track this down.  It has to be the cap, or the motor.  If I have to I will figure out how to straight wire it in to the house so that it runs all the time to see if it cuts off then.  At least then we would have AC in here today until I can figure out what to do next.

Another thought I dreamed up last night is that it could be the motor has thermal protection and shuts itself off when it gets too hot.

And another possibility is that the compressor shares the same cap, so if I can isolate the fan motor to another cap it might run fine.  Then I would know there is something going on with the compressor that is making the fan not get enough power to run.

Yep, that is what we did last year when I was away all the time.  Unfortunately we picked the wrong guys.  This time around I am going to talk to people around here and see if we can get some recommendations.  But I need to get something going ASAP, even if it is temporary.  It is hot in here.

Yes sir the Thermal Overload may be cutting it off for heat reasons which is working but it should not be doing that right now. One question I have again is, is there any kind of top over the unit or anything cover the exhaust part of the unit? I was just thinking of what would make the fan heat up if that is the problem? RTR!
