Hey SC let me know if that fixes it, because I am curious why that capacitor isn't putting out full power? RTR!

Well, the capacitor was definitely bad.  I took it back to the guys that I bought it from and they tested it for me.  The gave me a new one, and they tested it before I left.

It runs for a little while now, but then the fan motor overheats again and it shuts off.  If I run the fan motor with the blades blowing down instead of up, it will run for several hours nonstop without issue.  But then the compressor gets too hot and shuts off.  So now I think it is the ambient heat from inside the unit that is being basically blown right across the motor that is making it too hot.  The last time it shut off I lifted the top grill off and touched the motor.  It was so hot that it would burn you if you held onto it.  I touched the compressor and it was a little warm, but nothing bad.  So I am not sure where all of that heat is coming from.  It doesn't seem good though.

Sad

I tried to rig me up a heat shield to block some of that heat from the motor, but it didn't really work.  Of course these are all just experiments designed to help me zero in on what the exact problem is so that I can make sure I fix the root cause, instead of just replacing parts all willy nilly until it magically starts working.

I know the original fan motor was bad because you could barely turn it with your hands.  I know the original capacitor was bad because it was obvious by looking at it.  So both of those parts had to be replaced.  Now I just need to figure out what the real problem is that is causing those fan motors to get so hot and burn out.  I looked at the contacts and they seem to be fine.  I might bypass them altogether tomorrow and plug the fan wire straight onto the hot side.  I have a master switch outside that I use to turn the whole thing on and off, so this will be fine to do as a test.  If the fan runs for a long time without getting too hot then I will know it is the contacts not letting enough juice flow.

Hey SC do you have 240 Volts across that Motor? If you have that then you must have something creating drag on that motor, like the bearings binding. I just thought about this have you check this motor on the fan while it is running to see make sure there is no wobble in the shaft? I know you know about the one-lines so that is not the answer.
If there is 240 across the motor and it is not tripping off the O.L.s then we have to have a mechanical problem in that fan motor binding. RTR!

That is exactly what was wrong with the old fan motor.  The shaft was wobbly, and it was really hard to turn.  This new motor seems fine mechanically.  I have not tested the voltage across it yet, but I did finally find my meter.  Maybe I can do that tomorrow.

On a happy note, I have the lowes fan installed in there and it is running great.  That copper line running in to the house to the air handler is the coldest it has been all day.  The temp has already dropped about 3 degrees in here.  I will check the lowes fan to see if it is getting hot.  If not, then I know that the heat build up on the fan motor is generated by the fan motor itself.  If the lowes fan gets hot then I know it is the ambient temperature within the unit, which probably means the compressor is getting really hot and is about to go out again.

Maybe this will get us by for a little while so I can investigate what is wrong with the fan motor.

27-10 Miami run since 5:00 before the half. They're wearing down the Mavs.

It's always a good idea to give up a ton of uncontested dunks in the Finals. That always works.

Are you suggesting he is applying for the WV HC job or that he is out drinking with Holgorsen?  Smiley
