Golf is strange down here. Right across the bay from me in Milton was The Moors. A great golf course and where I got my one and only hole-in-one. It closed last year. Creekside was a Pensacola course that closed 2 years ago. Osceola is a public course in Pensacola and it's closed for renovation. In the greater P'cola area, that leaves 2 courses that are open; Marcus Point and Scenic Hills. Marcus Point fairways and greens have gone to hell in the past 2 months, I'm told due to lack of rain. In contrast, Scenic Hills is in great shape. They haven't had any rain either, so I don't buy the Marcus Point story. My question is, when you and another course are currently the only game in town, and as a result, business is good, how do you let your course get so run down? It really pizzes me off, because when it's in good shape, I prefer MP to all other area courses.

Well, I'm off to play a tune-up round of golf if I can stand the heat. Later.

I found a link for the course. It a city owned course in Decatur. It is not plush by any means but it is well maintained.

Didn't mean to leave you hanging. I had an emergency errand to run. Next time I'm up that way, I'll PM you and maybe we can play some golf. The good thing about golf, Even if you play bad, there's always beer.

Have you played any of the Robert Trent Jones Trail courses? They are real nice. I am 45 minutes from the Huntsville and shoals locations. B'ham is a little over an hour away.

Have they improved Hampton Cove any?  I haven't been in a few years, but it used to be the worst of the bunch, IMO.

All you guys talking about shooting the golfs makes me haz the jealous. I haz never played a round in my life (with the exception of putt-putt   Tongue ), so I wanted to know what ad-vice youse guys would give to a golf novice (actually lower than novice) on how to start picking up the game (particularly when you don't haz a ton of money to use toward said game).

CC - learn some basic technique (proper grip, swing plane, etc) and have those in mind before you ever go out and hit your first bucket.  Bad habits are hard to break.

A lot of people feel Hampton Cove is the worst location on the RTJ Trail. I tend to agree it is not up to par with the other courses. However, I still like it very much. I prefer the Highlands Course.

The Shoals location is outstanding. Both courses are in great shape. They are very hard. Greenville is another I like very much.

HL is right. Read up a little bit first on proper grip, set-up to the ball, swing plane, etc. before you do anything. Then, go to a driving range and start hitting balls. I always start with a pitching wedge and work my way up. Be sure to practice your short game too, chipping & putting. Do that for a while before going to a course. It'll help you a lot.

Pay a few bucks and get yourself a couple of lessons, then you will have an idea of what you are doing when you practice.

Unfortunately, I give advice better than I play.  Undecided

I have never had a lesson. I taught myself to play in high school. My grip is bad to this day. I fight a slice for 18 holes when I play. They are giving you good advice, take a few lessons and get off to a good start.
