Hear is a funny story about Bear Bryant I ran accross today. This is from the book "Laughing With The Bear".

In the first years after he returned to the Alabama Crimson Tide, Coach Bryant's teams were known for being considerably smaller than their opponents. Although they typically weighed anywhere from ten to thirty pounds less than the opposition, their quickness allowed them to compensate for their lack of size.

One Friday in the early sixties, long-time Southeastern Conference officials Butch Lambert and Harold Johnson got into a conversation about Bryant's uncanny ability to win games with such small players as they drove to that week's Crimson Tide game. Johnson told Lambert that he thought that Coach Bryant could teach a four foot pygmy to guard Wilt Chamberlain (the giant 7"2" basketball star). The next day, when Lambert saw Bryant in the Alabama Crimson Tide dressing room before the game, the official approached the coach and told him that Johnson had given him a great compliment. When the coach inquired what the compliment was, Lambert told him about the Chamberlain comment. However, Bryant was preoccupied with getting ready for the upcoming game and he told Lambert: "Hell Butch, I don't know anything about coaching basketball."

Lambert then went over and began a conversation with Alabama assistant coach Dude Hennessey. The conversation abruptly ended as Lambert felt a tap on his shoulder. As the official turned around, he saw Coach Bryant grinning as he towered over him. Bear then remarked to Lambert "That ain't to say that ole SOB can't be guarded."

I enjoyed a story that had to do with interviews and Coach Bryant's tendency to mumble. Seems a yankee reporter took a tape recorder into Bryant's office so as not to miss anything. One long Coach Bryant story was particularly inaudible to the yankee ear. He didn't catch of word of it.

So the story goes, the reporter left Coach Bryant's office and found some assistants to translate for him. He played the tape. The assistant laughed and said, "I ain't heard him tell that one" as he walked off chuckling.

Applause E-Cred for the pmull story. I hadn't heard that one.

Mornin' guys. Good head shot on the deer.

Message was that the deer was probably in the garden.  Shot from 10'.  Grin

New nickname: "Eagle Eye Chechem". Wink

Not me.  I'm a traditional-hunter guy.  I'd rather walk for hours without luck than shoot a deer in the suburbs.

I've killed 3 deer in my life, all with an automobile. 2 of them with the same car, 2 years apart.

Good Morning 2. I saw you sitting on 399 e-cred and feel obligated to get you to 400.

Thanks pmull, I appreciate that.  Cheesy

The phone battery croaked, so no pics of today's work.  I have a dental appt in a few minutes, but thought I'd check in and report.

We decided to put the new beadboard ceiling up in one room to see how it looks.  That required some preparation; we pulled nails from the old ceiling joists and strung up the can lights, ran wiring across the room through the attic to other rooms, slapped up some nailers, took down all of the old electrical boxes and fixtures, and cleaned everything.  That was the morning.

You guys?  Smitty, what'd you get done?  Mowing?

I did some weed eating earlier while temps were cooler. I have always thought that cutting grass during the heat of the day (direct overhead sun in July, August)) was not good for the lawn. Is that, in your expert opinion, true?

I don't think it hurts grass to mow it during the heat.  Only thing related to that is to not cut it too short during a drought; save moisture and use the shade it provides itself.  I think the reason people don't mow during the morning is the moisture; harder on the mower.

The act of cutting causes stress to some degree. Doing while full sun causes additional stress. How much, and whether or not it is worth factoring in, is what I am questioning. BTW, weed eating while the grass is damp from either dew or rain makes cutting easier. Clogging is the problem for both weed eating and mowing, when the grass is wet. But I sometimes plan for mowing on cloudy days, or try to finish just before a rain storm or, ideally, a day or two of rain and clouds. Trying to avoid the "brown/dead" look we get in August due to lack of rain or excessive heat (or both). These problems are not a big issue here.

I got two of those push mowers out of our shed a few days ago. Cleaned them up. Sand papered axles,conditioned/waxed, tire blacked, sharpened, etc. One of the two is likely to be the one I used when cutting my Grandad's grass when I was 8 years old (or so). Plan to install hangers on the garage wall to display them. I also have a large box full of Grandads carpentry tools. Hand planers, hand drill, etc. that I take good care of. All these tools are mostly wooden including the lawnmowers. Any ideas for display/use, other than selling them?
