whats the plastic for?

It keeps the fine particles of blown-in insulation from filtering through the cracks and knots of the wood.  It may not be necessary with the beadboard, but it helps ensure a clean room and air-tight ceiling.

What kind of ceiling is that?
Years ago when I built my home, I put up 6 mil plastic. Around the inside walls and ceilings. It makes for a more airtight structure. Less energy costs.

 Cool.

Beadboard.  You can buy this particular type at Home Depot.  You get 20% off if you buy a lot of it.  Grin

That looks like a lot of climbing up and down ladders to move over to the next nailing spot.

You have to use clear 6 mil plastic or you can't see the ceiling joists or studs.

Maybe it is just the picture or perhaps I missed a step in your process but this ceiling looks painted. No knotty pine look. I''ve see it both stained and painted but never pre-painted? What am I missing, Cat?

That looks like a lot of climbing up and down ladders to move over to the next nailing spot.

We had 3 ladders across the 14-foot sq room.  We could reach the entire width from those 3.  They stayed in pacle, but we indeed had to climb them all day.  We had to measure and cut each board individually in another room anyhow; it was a pain to keep the joint ends somewhat random.

Nail guns make a job like that so much easier.  Imagine having to drive all those nails with a hammer.  Unless you are used to doing that, you would hardly be able to raise your arm over your head by the time you had a few boards put up.  Not to mention you would probably have to move the ladder for every nail since you couldn't just reach out and squeeze a trigger.

I enjoy that kind of work.  I did stuff like that all the time when I was a kid/teenager.  I would probably still be doing it today, but somewhere along the way I realized that I could sit in a chair and type on a computer and make a whole lot more money than what I was getting for carpentry work.

LOL. Everyone started where you are now. One weekend job at a time until someday you realize, "Hey, I got skilz". BTW, I am a horrible carpenter and even worse mechanic but that has never slowed me down. RTR

You know WV, I may just have to do that sometime. I have always regretted that carpentry and some skillz like that were something I did not learn as a kid (I don't blame my dad; he didn't learn it either). As I look back now, I probably would have taken some shop classes while in school. Back then I was so incredibly arrogant to think that only dumbest guys took those classes. Now I realize how smart they really were, and I wish I had been a little more understanding and taken some of that instruction. Hindsight = 20/20

Anybody can learn if they want to.  Team up with somebody that knows what they are doing and learn by watching them.  Also you can sign up to volunteer a day with Habitat for Humanity.  They don't care if you have any experience or not, they just need somebody who is willing to help.  There will be plenty of guys there that know what they are doing and they always have to teach the volunteers some basic stuff to get them started.  It is a great way to learn.  A good portion of the people that volunteer have never done that kind of work before, so the old hands are more than happy to show them the ropes and are just thankful to have some people there to help.

My dad wasn't around.  I learned a lot from one of my uncles.  The most important thing he taught me had nothing to do with carpentry.  It was that I could do it, in spite of what the rest of the world thought about me.  I remember when he decided to add on to his house and a lot of people were amazed at him for doing the work himself.  Of course he knew what he was doing, he just didn't do that sort of work every day professionally.  "You should hire an expert to help you" was the prevailing thought.  I was awestruck as I watched him ignore that sentiment and go right ahead without even considering that idea.

If you are willing to work, then you will learn.  The world is full of people that will tell you it can't be done.  These are the folks that have never amounted to anything and probably never will.  Ignore them and do it anyway.

Just be careful and always think about safety, especially when you are learning.
