The one I saw was on a small tag on a Christmas present in the cartoon.  It said "Do Not Open Til XMAS".  So it was obvious what it meant in that context.

Hey, there is BillBrosky.  His spidey sense must have detected our intriguing discussion on the origins of the term XMAS, so he came right over to clue us in.

Yep. I'll bet that is how this all started. Any other problems we can solve for folks?

I found the cartoon.  It was a Tom and Jerry from 1941.  That is old enough that it might be the first use.  I will bet there was no atheist intent or anything like that, that came along much later I'm sure.

Here is the wikipedia article about that cartoon:  Click here for link

That looks like more vendors than customers.  Do all the vendors really just sell things back and forth?  Do you end up buying about as much as you sell on a typical day?

Much of it is trading among vendors.  There are 200 tables here; about 75 vendors.  All are collectors.

Wow!  A wealth of info, including taxes I didn't know we still "owed".  We'll, let me tell y'all something, when I have collected OUR shoes, I will NOT pay taxes on said product.  Our fore fathers walked many a mile for false info on where the shoes were located.  I have since learned they were actually in town, on what now sits the KFC franchisin' business.  The reason I know this is that I went in there two years ago and had the WORST wings I have ever had.  I axed for the traditional hot wing and wuz given the yankee kind with the sauce that wil stain the best of rebel shirts.  Leonard Skynard will NEVER be the same!   Angry
