The little runt died. Sad

And then there were 7.  All of these will make it.  The other runt loses out on a nipple a lot, but momma doesnt push him away like she did the little sick one, he'll be fine we supplement his feeding.

The 6 are huge.

I hate it for the little guy, but he's prolly better off. Good for the others. How many male, female?

BTW, Chech, I got your Claude Rains ("Invisible Man") joke. Have an e-cred. One for you too, Smitty for daddying the pups.

This is all interesting to me.  I've never had a pet that had offspring.  Obviously the mom's instincts were to promote the inevitable (the poorest one of the pack dying).  I guess this is so she can provide better care and more nourishment to her others.  It's also possible the instinct is built in to protect her others (so as not to be more vulnerable to predators in the wild).  It's absolutely fascinating that she made the distinct that which runt would live and which wouldn't.

You reckon Mama Dog had any emotion similar to remorse that she had to take action to help the stronger 7?

Or am I just being nuts and there's a better explanation?

She rejected that one right from the beginning.  She would lick it, but that's all, we would put it close and try and get it to nurse and it couldn't and then she would push it away.  We figure she just knew it had no chance.  The one, once it became able to nurse itself and stick with the others, got accepted, but at first she allowed it to get pushed out by the others, but she didnt all out reject it and push it away.

Here we go again guys. 30-50% chance storm in Gulf could develope into hurricane.

Quote
Large disturbance in southern Gulf shows organization; Tropical Depression 14 could form today.

MOBILE, Alabama -- A large area of disturbed weather over the southern Gulf of Mexico is beginning to show some signs of organization but any anticipated development is expected to be slow, according to the National Weather Service.

An Air Force plane is scheduled to investigate the area on Wednesday, if necessary.

This system has a medium chance -- about 30 percent -- of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours.

Great news to have a storm there in the Gulf, hopefully.  It could solve this fire problem.

I just got home.  Bad accident on the highway (car tumbled after hitting a tractor with a bush hog).  Pray for all involved.  Please be careful, Smitty.

More adorable puppy pics

We change that sheet out daily.  There is a shower curtain under it.  As you can see the little suckers are a bit messy.

They're going to suck Mom dry.  Hope she's getting plenty of food and water.

Laughing.  The pillow is a good touch.  Can't believe she uses it.

Three-Day Flood Watch Announced for State College Area

The National Weather Service has announced a flood watch that will remain in effect for the State College area and neighboring counties until 8 p.m. Thursday, according to an AccuWeather.com post.

It says rainfall totals from Tuesday morning through Thursday morning are expected to average between two and four inches in the affected areas. Isolated local rainfall amounts in excess of five inches are possible, according to the post.

Residents should continue to monitor weather forecasts and "be alert for possible flood warnings," it reads. "Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop."
