On January 1st 1993.  Dad and I got up early that morning and left my parents  Ft. Morgan condo and took the ferry across Mobile Bay to the Dolphin Island Causeway and then up to Interstate 10 and headed west to NOLA.  3 hours at max!

We stayed in Slidell Louisiana at a Holiday Inn? About 30 miles this side of NOLA off of I-10!

We checked into hotel at Slidell early and then drove into New Orleans and for lunch at some restaurant that had Shrimp Poor-boy sandwiches.  Dad ate an oyster poor-boy sandwich!

We walked around and toured Jackson Square’s markets and honky-tonked at a few bars and listened to some Cajun music for a few hours.  Then we dropped in at CAFE DU'MONDE in the quarter for some coffee and beignets!

Sugar Bowl started late at like 8:00. So we had time and ate dinner "Ralph and Kacoos".

Watched Tide crush Miami and then drove back to Slidell.

Some jackass Miami fan had wrote in the dirt on rear windshield of my Chevy truck camper “we are still better than the Tide" in parking deck!

Dad got mad over that, I thought it was funny!

Back in Slidell at around 2:00 AM, dad was hungry so we stopped at the local “Waffle House” and had breakfast. Place was packed and crowded with Alabama fans celebrating #12! NC. All eating breakfast. Sobering up!

At hotel dad fell quick asleep. I was still too pumped to go to sleep! #12! NC! I stayed on the phone for an hour or so using my phone card, calling and talking to friends and workers back here in Alabama. I was yelling RTR! and stuff and dad slept right thru it all.

Got up next morning, went back to same “Waffle House” for breakfast and got back to Ft. Morgan condo around lunch.

I can still remember dad and the Dolphin Island ferry boat captain talking about the football game and about serving in the US Navy during WWII, during the hour or so trip back across Mobile Bay to Ft. Morgan.

Dad read the NOLA newspaper “Times Picayune” on ride back. Front page of NOLA newspaper had a picture of Rohan Marley ( Bob Marley’s son  who played for the “U” , being flipped upside down in the air as a Bama player blocked him.

Title of front page in Huge Pearl Harbor block letters  – “ Tide Raises Cane 34-13 ”!

Newspaper named headlines after the Mobile Mardi Gras parade “Raising Cane:
that is held in Mobile ever Sunday before Fat Tuesday - Joe Cane Day!

Anyone can march in that parade. Homemade floats, porter potties with wheels, horses pulling hay wagons, shopping carts, all kinds of crazy floats and people!

Winds down thru Mobile and ends up at cemetery where Joe Cane is supposedly buried; hince the name Raising Cane!

A good memory. RTR!

Good stuff, Hank. I hope to make some memories like that with my boy as he gets older. At least at 4 1/2 he has "RTR!" down pat.  Cheesy

I can sorta remember seeing The Goal Line Stand for around $250. 4 nights at a flea bag room on Airline Highway, maybe a couple of Lucky Dogs, $1 for some guy to tell me where I got my shoes, milk jug of 151, Pabst Blue Ribbon (ice came with the room), and gasoline. Now tell me this will be 6 times as much fun!

 Kiss

Please tell me you didn't drink the gasoline and drove home on the 151.  Shocked

 Laughing

MW, I used to live a block off Airline Hwy (1960-61).  It was a dump then too.  Those houses were bulldozed about 1980.  Sad
I think Airline is HWY90. It is a dump from the MS/LA state line to the Sabine.

I wish you'd never mentioned the Acme Oyster House(2S). Angry The only location in NO I know of is in the Quarters, but google says there is one at the Airport. The section of town CAT and I are talking about has nothing to do with the airport except the noise.

I also saw that (I guess) GNOIA is now Louis Armstrong International Airport? Huh?

WV, the one I'm talking about is actually off of Veterans Hwy in downtown Metairie. Veterans runs parallel to Airline in Metairie.

There used to be some great oyster houses along Airline Hwy back ~ 1960.  My Dad took us out for po-boys once in a while.  There were at least 3 of those spots we visited; great food.  Popcorn

Great oyster and seafood places all along the Gulf Coast and south Louisiana. I did a presentation for the "Alabama Chapter of Health Underwriters" yesterday at "Felix's Fish Camp Restaurant" in Mobile. It's on Battleship Pkwy about a mile from the U.S.S. Alabama. Excellent seafood there.

That's the only good place (pacle?) along the causeway now, unless a new one has popped up during the past year.  Excellent food.

I'm getting hungry.  Tongue

Yeah, I didn't see much else there except for "Tacky Jack's" which is right across the street from "Felix's". Don't know if it's any good or not.

Felix's is awesome. Last time I was there, I got their grilled porkchops covered in a crawfish sauce with cheese grits. Makes you want to get up and slap yo' mama.

If you only get to NOLA every now and then, treat yourself to Commander's Palace.
