Ga. Tech Wants Waiver for Bowl Game

I think it will be hilarious if Tech wins the ACC title.

Georgia Tech and the ACC last week filed for a waiver seeking relief from a new NCAA rule that would keep the Yellow Jackets from a bowl if they lose Saturday's ACC championship game, the conference told CBSSports.com.

The school and league crafted the waiver after it became apparent Tech could finish 6-7 by losing the championship game against Florida State. Miami removed itself from bowl consideration last week automatically elevating the Jackets to becoming the Coastal Division representative against the Florida State on Saturday. Miami's decision came when Georgia Tech was 6-5. A loss Saturday would drop Tech to 6-7

I feel sorry for the Orange Bowl. At one tme it was either the most prestigious or 2nd most with the Rose Bowl. Who was the genius that hooked them up with the ACC? What a downfall!

The Rose Bowl aways had the PAC 10 - Big 10 tie in. The old SWC had the Cotton Bowl tie-in when the Cotton Bowl was a major bowl. The SEC tied up with the Sugar. The Orange Bowl got the old Big 8. All of that was a long time ago. The Rose and Sugar Bowl tie-in remain the same. The Fiesta got the Big 12 and by default the Orange got the ACC. No bowl has ever wanted to tie-in with the Big East.

IMO tie-ins have ruined the major bowls. After the BCS CG none of the big bowls will have good games. It needs to be 3 plays 4 and 5 plays 6 and so on. The bowl season would be more fun if the BCS games were better.

The Sugar Bowl could be good this year.  They get first pick by virtue of sending an SEC team to the BCSCG (ND has no conference affiliation).  So technically, they could choose someone like Oregon to play (cough cough) Florida, although others think they'll go closer to home with Oklahoma to make sure the seats get filled.

But you're probably right about the other Bowls.  The Rose Bowl could end up with a UCLA v. Nebraska repeat from earlier in the season (or Stanford, woohoo).  The Fiesta will have Kansas State versus who cares.  And the Orange will probably get ACC v. BigEast like always.

Bingo! I can remember when the only tie-in was the Rose Bowl. Some of Bama's biggest games were in the Orange Bowl.

We have gone from teams like Alabama, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Penn State, LSU, Ohio State, & Oklahoma playing in the Orange to the likes of Wake Forest, Cincinnati, Clemson, Iowa, & other football "powers" playing there. What a shame and a disaster.

Pretty embarassing that a team playing for your conference's championship has to apply for a waiver to be bowl eligible.

The PAC 12 had to do this too last year with UCLA.  They finished 6-7 and went to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

On the BCS show Sunday night on ESPN, they were talking about the possibility of Kent State getting into a BCS bowl.  They are currently number 17 in the BCS standings and play Northern Illinois in the conference championship on Saturday.  They could possibly sneak up to number 16 and be BCS bowl-eligible if they win.  I don't mean any disrespect to Kent State (since they did help mold CNS, after all), but SERIOUSLY?!?  I wish that they would allow more than 2 teams from a conference in the BCS bowls so that the SEC could get three or four (or more) in there.

After all the hoopla about having to be a conference champion to play in the BCSCG, we have Wisconsin (7-5), GT (6-6), and UCLA last year (and this), as potential conference champions.

The rule is ridiculous. The loser of the SECCG misses on a BCS bowl.

Kent State being ranked at all is a joke.  Their toughest game this year was Kentucky, and they lost to Kentucky 47-14.

If given a choice, I'd take Kent State over GT, but I'd rather watch neither in a BCS bowl.
