Although the official BCS standings will not be released until Sunday evening, Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel is reporting that Northern Illinois will be going to the Orange Bowl to face ACC champion Florida State.

This would make Northern Illinois only the fifth school outside of the AQ conferences to qualify for a BCS bowl, and the first from the MAC. The other four schools are Boise State, TCU, Hawaii and Utah . Remarkably, in the 7 BCS bowls those teams have appeared in they have a record of 5-2, and one of those losses was by TCU against Boise State in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl.

Northern Illinois is 12-1 on the season and won its second straight MAC title on Friday night, defeating Kent State 44-37 in double overtime.

If this is true who gets left out? Oklahoma?

Most projections show Louisville vs Fl State in the Orange. I think Oregon and Florida will be at large picks ahead of Oklahoma.

This is ridiculous when the SEC runner up is going to be left out.

I hate the bowl rule that only two teams maximum can go to BCS bowls. We have 6 teams in the top 10 all deserving of a BCS bowl. Four get to go to lesser bowls while Northern Illinois, Louisville and Wisconsin go to major bowls.

And Ga Tech almost beat FSU yesterday.  They had the ball with a chance to win but threw an interception.

^^^THIS^^^

UGA, Florida, USCe, TAMU and the Who all deserve a BCS along with the Tide. The fact that such deserving teams have to go to inferior bowls while those mentioned above go to the BCS is ludicrous and is just one reason there are problems with the college football postseason.

The BIg 10 should have to forfeit their spot. When your two best teams are on probation in a weak conference your # 3 does not deserve the spot.

At least require 10 wins for the conference to get the AQ.  Can you imagine if Tech had beaten FSU?  A team that had to get a waiver to even be bowl eligible could have gone to a BCS game.

Well, I'm sure everyone will be impressed when they bring 5000 fans for the game & the Orange Bowl has 15,000 to 20,000 seats empty on national tv.

Yep, and that will not make the Orange Bowl people happy at all. Or the TV people. Or the advertisers.

Nothing says " are there any BBall games on?" like a bowl game featuring NIU.
