Who's better 1990s' Nebraska or Alabama? Tom Osborne won't compare but others do (vote, comment)
"It doesn't come off very well when you try to compare a team that played 12, 14, 15 years ago with a team playing today and say this team would beat that team. Nobody knows."

Nebraska had a great team during those years but the Big 12 was a joke back then. The Southwest conference and Big 8 had just merged. Texas and Oklahoma were down. Nebraska rolled through their conference schedule each year without a difficult game. The BCS was not in place yet. Nebraska only played in one #1 vs #2 match during that span. One of their titles was split with Michigan.

I'm going with Alabama on strength of SEC schedule and domination in the BCS title games against the second best team in the country.

Colorado was the chief threat to the Huskers in the '90s. Rival Oklahoma was in a down cycle, and Kansas State didn't fully emerge as a national power until 1998, the year after Osborne retired.

I do remember watching Nebraska dismantle Florida in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl, 62-24, and it really wasn't even that close.

But you can't compare teams from different eras.  Bama should easily beat that Nebraska team; with improvements in conditioning and schemes since the mid-90s, college football is different today than a few decades ago.

Nebraska had great teams. There is doubt about that. My problem with their run in the 90's is their schedule. They only had to get up to play one or two good teams all year. They were running the table with their easy regular season schedule in the late 80's and early 90's but they could not win their bowl game. They lost the Orange Bowl to thug Miami several times. I was living in Nebraska in 1992 and they were as happy as we were when we killed Miami in the Sugar Bowl.

BTW, Osborne molded his mid 90's defense around Alabama's 1992 team. He saw team speed was equally important to size and strength. He even visited with CGS in Tusacloosa during spring practice of 1993.

Nebraska wasn't the only one with an easy schedule, I'd suggest that Miami (BigEast) and Florida State (ACC) had easier schedules in those days -- kinda like Boise State today.

Not only was the BIG12 weak during that run (as pmull elaborated) but the speed and size of the college game has increased during those decades. I would take BAMA -24.

I watched those Nebraska teams play and in that era they were the best. Big Dave Rimington came out of Nebraska and now has an award named after him. Alabama of today has to have a small of help to get in the right places, and back when Nebraska was strong they were destroying people without much help. I know there was a time when they kicked us all over the field. Johnny Rogers was a great player for them, but we have names today that are household names even after their Freshman year. I truly don't think a comparison could be made. We are on top now and I will enjoy it because it won't last forever. RTR!
