I like this move by Bill Battle. Women's basketball has become a high profile sport and we have been the SEC doormat since Rick Moody resigned as coach. I hope we go after the best coach available and hire us a winner. I am also glad to see Wendell Hudson get reassigned to another position. He has been an Alabama man for a long time. I know he is disappointed he did not get the job done.

University of Alabama Director of Athletics Bill Battle announced on Monday that Crimson Tide women’s basketball head coach Wendell Hudson has been reassigned to an administrative position within the Department of Athletics and will not return as head coach of the women’s basketball team for the 2013-14 season.

“Today’s decision is a mutual one between Wendell and me,” Battle said. “We have had several discussions over the last few weeks that led to this decision. Wendell has been an excellent ambassador for Alabama Athletics for many years and I am pleased that he will continue to serve in that manner for us while also contributing to our ongoing mission in a variety of other ways as well.”

A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

Wendell is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, but he's just not a coach. When Rick Moody left, I think the University just wanted a pacifier for that sport with no serious intentions of spending a lot of money on the program. They did give them an arena to play in, Foster Auditorium, but again I think this was just another pacifier for the girls basketball program.

As Mal Moore told us in January, all of the sports programs would be getting more attention in upgrading their programs, I think this is step one for Bill Battle and it will be interesting to watch this develop.

Our memories can sometimes remember only the good stuff and forgets the bad stuff. Rick Moody led the program into mediocrity. His last 6 years as head coach were average to awful. Look at this:

1999–2000   Alabama   15–14   5–9   8th   WNIT First Round
2000–2001   Alabama   19–12   5–9   8th   WNIT Second Round
2001–2002   Alabama   19–12   7–7   8th   WNIT Quarterfinals
2002–2003   Alabama   13–15   3–11   10th
2003–2004   Alabama   12–16   4–10   10th
2004–2005   Alabama   14–15   4–10   9th

We won 92 games the last 6 years for less than 16 wins a year. Moody had his 25 year Alabama State pension and retired. Personally, I think he was pushed out the door and I do not think Alabama intentionally let the program slip further after he left. Bad decisions by Mal Moore led to poor hires for HC. I am looking forward to us getting a real HC for our women's BB program.

I used to fish and play golf with Rick and he told me that it was very tough coaching the ladies, it's a lot different than coaching men. He said his biggest problem was trying to keep them from getting pregnant and them attending classes. He had a lot of discipline issues those last years that he coached and he finally just gave up as his teams worsened.

I would like to see Bama get a good woman coach this time, not just a woman coach but a good one.

Excellent info and kinda what I thought to a degree. It was apparent to me he had given up the last 2 or 3 years as he approached having his pension secure, I just did not know the reason for it. Thanks for the info.

I want us to get the best coach available man or woman. I think there are some advantages to having a female coach but males also do well. Women's basketball has become a high profile sport and our program has been the SEC's worse team for years. We need to change that. It starts at the top with the head coach and administration. We need to get the best coach available and give them the resources to be successful.
