The SEC office has mandated that league schools upgrade their non-conference basketball schedules to improve the overall conference strength of schedule and the barn pulls out of its preseason tournament because it is three sure losses. Meanwhile Alabama is playing in the NIT Tip-Off Tournament with teams like Duke and Arizona. We have also announced games with UCLA and Oklahoma. I guess the barn wants to have a .500 record so they will not have to fire another coach.

Quote
The Auburn men's basketball team has not released its 2013-14 schedule yet, but the Tigers have already made at least one change.

Auburn is no longer a part of the preseason Puerto Rico Tip Off, according to the tournament's web site.

The Puerto Rico Tip-Off, one of the nation's toughest preseason tournaments, is scheduled for Nov. 21-24, and the new field only features teams that reached the postseason after the 2012-2013 season.

Quote
A spot in the loaded Puerto Rico Tip Off field would have fit well with the SEC's agreement to submit non-conference schedules for review in an effort to help the league's NCAA Tournament chances.

According to most ratings services like the Pomeroy ratings and RPIforecast.com, Auburn's non-conference schedule ranked near the bottom of the country last season.

You have to give the barn credit. They did not like having the worst record in the conference last year. Instead of working harder they are making their schedule easier.

...and I doubt they will do any better.

They will end up scheduling someone like Tenn.-Chattanooga, Georgia State, JSU, Alabama State, Austin Peay, etc.

If you are chicken, then flap your wings and crow!!!

Seems like I remember them backing out of a football game with Fla State when Wingnut arrived on the scene.

Jacobs is really doing a great job down there and he's making a lot of money to do that great job. 2 + 2 = ?

What a great line-up of teams, I wish Alabama was playing there, it would be a real challenge.

Although the rest of the field remains unchanged -- a field that includes Michigan, Georgetown, Kansas State, VCU, Florida State, Long Beach State and Charlotte -- since the tournament announced its preliminary field in November, Auburn has been replaced by Northeastern.

I would love to see our team tested by the likes of Michigan, Georgetown, and even VCU & FSU. Wow.

The SEC is reviewing all basketball schedules to make sure the SOS of each team is high enough that it does not hurt the overall RPI of the conference and member schools.

I wonder is the SEC office is going to want us to drop Auburn.

We had a SOS of 80 last year. We played 7 games against teams with RPI over 200. Lamar was at 334 and Texas Texas Tech was 214. What hurt us was 5 conference games against Auburn 250 (2 games), USCe 238 and Miss State 230 (2games).

Bingo! Barbee is worried and knows he has to boost his won/lost record which means he has to do better in out-of-conference since he can not control the SEC schedule. He figures he can win 16-18 games over the season if he has a bunch of non-con cream puffs. He's not trying to make the NCAA Tourney, he's trying to survive, period.

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive is trying to boost the SEC RPI. In order to do that the SEC office is reviewing and approving all non-conference schedules. The SEC office may tell the barn to replace some games like Samford and Lipscomp with BCS or good mid-major compettion.

I will bet money Auburn does not upgrade their schedule. Jacobs & Barbee (especially Jacobs) are running scared. The BB program is in the toilet, along with other programs & Jacobs needs a break from all the sports disasters. I'm not sure what Slive can do if they schedule a bunch of cupcakes.

That line leads me to believe that Auburn may have been encouraged to drop out of the tournament field.  They stuck out like a sore thumb on that lineup card.

They replaced the Auburn with Northeastern. That is the team we beat easily in the first round of the NIT. I think they would rather have a bottom feeder SEC team like Auburn than Northeastern. I think Auburn saw three L's coming and backed out.

I think the teams that didn't get Auburn on in the tourney schedule complained about how it wasn't fair that everybody couldn't get an automatic W.
