Four members of the 1992 National Championship Alabama football team were on hand Friday as the Birmingham Barons faced the Moble BayBears at Regions Field.

And while baseball was the game being played on the field, a pregame discussion went to a football game that will only be played in the minds of Tide fans.

I still think the 2011 Bama team is the best ever team in college football, even with the regular season loss to LSU.

I don't know.  Last year's team might have been missing a step on defense, but it was a juggernaut on offense with AJ healthy.   Grin

The "O" was still pretty good in '11, but the "D" was the best on the planet. Not taking anything away from last year, as they were, indeed, a special unit, but the 2011 team will always be the best, IMO.

Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with you.  The 2011 D was the best.  And the O had Trent Richardson...  Lacy and Yeldon combined last year can't quite match that talent level, at least not yet.  But the addition of Cooper, and development of other WRs, last year added a vertical component never seen before at Bama, and the O Line was comparable to NFL teams.  If AJ had stayed healthy all season, Bama goes undefeated.

Maybe Supercoach is right for this years team, the D should be better, and the skill players are mostly back on offense.  The O line might be a question mark, but I have confidence it won't be once the season starts.

I think any of these teams would beat the 1992 squad.

I was wondering about the O-line as well, but CNS said that he was pleased with their progress and the way they are coming together as a unit on ESPN the other day, so I am not concerned any more.

If I played on that 92 team I would go to my grave saying we were the best ever. Of course if I played on any Alabama National Championship team I would say we were the best ever.

IMO the 79 team was pretty good. It was a different game with different type athletes back then but they dominated their opponents about as well as any team I can remember.

These players are delusional. The 1992 offense was pathetic, with a very poor passing offense & an overall offense that had WAY too many procedure, off-sides, delay of game, & holding penalties. It was pathetic. The following teams were far superior and more balanced:

1934
1966
1977
1978
2011
2012

The 2011 team would have totally shut them down and sent them home crying. We won 14 games with A LOT of close games. Notre Dame was 12-0 before facing us, Texas was 13-0, & LSU was 13-0. LSU was considered one of the best teams ever before the game with us. They had played a difficult schedule, but were whipped by the 2011 team. I love the 1992 team, but I fully remember their many shortcomings on offense.

All you can do is line up and beat the team the schedule gives you. I don't think the 1960's teams could play with the 2000's teams but in 1992 they were pretty darn awesome.

Well I know one thing if our defense do not make a goal line stand and Paul hit that PSU RB at the time he did, we would be one less NC trophy. RTR!

It's impossible to compare one era to another. You have to look at what they were good at and how they played against other teams. The 1966 team was quick & fast, had a great passing attack and a super defense. Sounds like a great formula for any era. The 1934 team would also fit that description.
