This whole thing is just stupid.  Would someone please tell me how JM getting paid for his autograph gives him an athletic advantage?

No athletic advantage.
But also, 'NO AMATEUR STATUS'.
Yeah, that's a crock too...

If the money had gone to the NCAA, then it would have been okay.

This does not look as bad as first reported. The NCAA must prove JF accepted extra benefits which will be hard to do. This is beginning to sound like the Trent Richardson and T-Town Men's Wear story from a few years ago.

Quote
Now, using a student's likeness to profit is an NCAA violation — but so long as that student doesn't actually receive anything in return, there is no significant punishment that can be levied by the NCAA. So all Texas A&M would need to do is send a cease and desist to this autograph broker and assert that Manziel received no payment for his autographs. Manziel can argue that he signed the autographs as a gesture of good will — a point hammered home in a recent ESPN profile — and had no idea that his autographs would be sold.

Provided there is no direct evidence to contradict Manziel's assertion that he wasn't paid — and if he was paid in cash, how could you prove it for sure? — then Manziel's eligibility would not be impacted.

I'm guessing you meant to post "doesn't", but yeah, this will be little more than a slap on the wrist if there is anything to it.

You are right. I went back and modified my post to say "does not". If they find a money trial he is toast. I have lost faint in the NCAA finding anything. Unless you turn yourself in the NCAA is incompentent. The Miami case was a slam dunk and they screwed that up.

There's a lot of belly aching from all over about the NCAA and rightfully so. Emmert better get the ship righted or the organization may be history.

Exactly.

Look, stopping at STOP SIGNS when nobody is coming is still against the law.

Chech Story:
I was once stopped by the Oxford Police for rolling through a stop sign.
He asked if I saw it.
"Yes", I said.  "They should all be YIELD SIGNS.  Why should I stop if it's clear to go?  Every STOP SIGN should be replaced by a YIELD SIGN."
He laughed and told me, "Have a nice day."

TRUE STORY.

TRUE STORY.
A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a Sheriffs
Deputy. He thinks that he is smarter than the Deputy because he is
sure that he has a better education. He decides to prove this to
himself and have some fun at the deputies expense...

Deputy says, "License and registration, please."

Lawyer says, "What for?"

Deputy says, "You didn't come to a complete stop at the
stop sign."

Lawyer says, "I slowed down, and no one was coming."

Deputy says, "You still didn't come to a complete stop.
License and registration, please."

Lawyer says, "What's the difference?"

Deputy says, "The difference is, you have to come to a
complete stop, that's the law. License and registration, please!"

Lawyer says, "If you can show me the legal difference
between slow down and stop, I'll give you my license and
registration and you give me the ticket, if not you let me go
with no ticket."

Deputy says, "Exit your vehicle, sir."

At this point, the deputy takes out his nightstick and
starts beating the ever-loving crap out of the lawyer and says:
"Do you want me to stop or just slow down?"

Thank God it wasn't a sheriff deputy who stopped me ...
