2nd hole.  As I said above, Phil's tee shot was into the deep rough.  His 2nd shot stayed in the rough, again deep.  He'll have to play a miracle shot to get onto the green and save par.  

addendum: Phil managed to slam a shot from the rough (great power), reaching the green.  But he'll have ~15' for par... YES.  That's Phil.

Phil on par-3 3rd.  Lucks runs out.
He sends a 7-iron left into rough.
Chips up to 17', but misses the putt.
Bogey.  Phil's +1.

Jimenez, the aging cigar-smoking, pony-tailed Spaniard, is at -2 and has a birdie attempt.

I may start smoking cigars!

Phil at par-5 4th.

He sends his 3-wood drive wide right.  Looks OB.  He's going to tee up again.
His provisional shot is right behind the first, hits a tree and a spectator, but stays in bounds.  Phil?  

BTW, the wind is still very slight (~10k).

Just reported: Phil's 1st ball was OB; rolled down the street parallel with the course.

Rory was -3, but got a bogey, and made a great save to avoid another.

Furyk finished at -5 (leader).
2 at -4.
4 at -3.

Phil at par-5 4th got out of the rough with his 4th shot, which stopped short of the green.  His 5th shot will have to be excellent to even get a bogey....
 

Phil decided to putt from 50 yards in front of the green.  Great putt, but rolls out (past) about 8'.  Phil misses the bogey; gets a double.  He's +3 after 4.

BTW, The cigar is at -4.

Phil hits his first fairway (with a fairway wood).  Congrats, "Thrill".

Someone named Idoki is -4 after 6.  Little guy who looks aged.

Par-4 5th.  Phil missed an opportunity from 18', but made par.

Adam Scott cruising: -2 (playing with Phil).  Chance for birdie at 6th.
Phil on green at par-3 6th, but a mile away from the hole.

BTW, the wind is up a bit: 15k.

This Idoki guy may be old enough to remember WWII (as a pilot!).  He's amazing.

Jimenez also.  Maybe he knew Generalisimo Francisco Franco (-3).

Notify the press; Phil hit a fairway.  He's not even carrying a driver, but is sending his tee shots everywhere (even onto highways - true).

Adam Scott also on the fairway.  He looks like a champ today; Phil and Tiger NOT....

Scott hits 3rd shot within 3'... gets the birdie (-4).
Phil misses the green right...
Chips past hole by 4'.

Adam Scott with the honor.  Hits a fairway wood far down the fairway.

Phil looks tired.  His hair is a mess.  He's sweating, a little fat.
Phil uses the only wood he's got in his bag today (3 wood).  Better swing than before.  He's on the fairway, just a couple of paces from the left rough.

Rory on 9th green.  Gets his birdie.  Now he's at -3.

8th hole.

Adam Scott with the honor.  Hits a fairway wood far down the fairway... puts 2nd shot 8' left of flag...., sinks it for -5 after just 8 holes.

Phil looks tired.  His hair is a mess.  He's sweating, a little fat.
Phil uses the only wood he's got in his bag today (3 wood).  Better swing than before.  He's on the fairway, just a couple of paces from the left rough...
2nd shot pushed left, on the green but 30' from the hole.... lags to 2'.

Rory on 9th green.  Gets his birdie.  Now he's at -3.
The Cigar is at the 10th.  Puts his shot on the green for a chance at birdie.  He's -3.
