Reggie Witherspoon Named Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

CAG has made a much needed change to the coaching staff. Tony Pujol has been let go and Reggie Witherspoon has been hired. Witherspoon has head coaching experience. I like this move. I think CAG lost a valuable assistant when Dan Hipsher left to become head coach at Texas Pan-America.

Head coach Anthony Grant has announced that Reggie Witherspoon has been hired as an assistant coach for the Alabama men's basketball team.

Witherspoon replaces former assistant coach Tony Pujol on the Alabama basketball staff.

"I am excited to announce the addition of Reggie Witherspoon to our coaching staff," Grant said. "Reggie brings a wealth of experience and coaching expertise. His abilities in developing talent and teaching the game are highly respected amongst his peers. His knowledge, combined with his impeccable character and ability to relate to and connect with people will make his transition seamless."

Witherspoon, who has 28 years of experience coaching basketball, most recently spent 14 years (1999-2013) as head coach at the University of Buffalo. He finished his career at Buffalo tied for second in program history with 198 wins.

I am cautiously optimistic. I want to see results before I get too giddy. It sounds good but he coached at Buffalo, not exactly a mecca of basketball and averaged 14 wins a year as HC. This is an interesting development and I am happy to see some fresh blood brought in.

Coaching at Buffalo can not be easy. They did not play in D1 until the late 90's and Witherspoon inherited a team that won only two games the previous year. His teams averaged scoring in the high 70's and 80's while he was head coach. He was know as an offensive coach. He ran a high-low offense at Buffalo that became known as the "Reggie Rise-Up". During his year off he spent time as a consultant with high schools, colleges (South Carolina and Illinois) and the NBA.

It looks like a good hire and we needed a change. Only time will tell if it pays off.

I'm somewhat concerned to read that Witherspoon was "stunned" when told he was fired as HC at Buffalo. He was 197-225 at Buffalo in 14 years & never won a conference title or made the NCAA Tourney & made 1 NIT. I guess with a record like that he was expecting a 5 year extension. Coaches live in another world (football & basketball) when it comes to their abilities & accomplishments.
