ATLANTA -- The Braves released renderings of their new suburban stadium Wednesday, a ballpark that will seat 41,500 and be surrounded by many revenue-generating amenities.

The Braves said on their stadium website that the facility in Cobb County will be the hub of a "play, work, stay" destination including shops, restaurants and entertainment venues, as well as a boutique hotel, office space and approximately 500 residences. The county is set to contribute $368 million toward the cost of the $672 million project, with the team providing the remainder of the funding.

The stadium is scheduled to open in 2017, replacing Turner Field in downtown Atlanta.

I love the first comment:

This is why governments at all levels are broke. Subsidization of a billion dollar private entity at the expense of more needed municipal projects to create a traffic headache. The current stadium has at least another 10-20 years of October heartbreak in it.

What is wrong with Turner Field?  I haven't been there in several years, but it was a top notch facility the last time I was there.

The field is still nice.  I think the "problem" isn't the field but the location.  There's more money to be made.

Yeah, seems like a waste to me. Seems like only yesterday when they played the first game at the Ted. I think the biggest areas of concern that sparked the building of the new park were that the Ted is located in a dangerous area of town, or at least surrounded by bad neighborhoods. And, downtown traffic became a parking lot when they had games there.

At any rate, looks like the "October heartbreaking" will move from Fulton County to Cobb County.

The 20 year least runs out. The Braves have a better offer to build a new stadium in a new location than to stay in downtown Atlanta. The developer of the new property is going to build a new state-of-the-art facility but they are going to add a lot of shopping, restaurants and retailers around the area which is projected to be worth a fortune. The Braves also like the location because most of their fans come from outside the "perimeter loop" on the North side.

The move is good for the Braves and fans but bad for Downtown Atlanta. I hope they can develop something nice on that property or the South side of I-20 will be an eyesore and even bigger dump than it is now.

It's hard to tell for certain from the drawings, but I swear it looks very similar to what Nationals Park in D.C. looks like. Not exact, but there are some similarities, particularly on the outside.

So who is going to purchase one of the 500 residences being built on site and loan it out to the rest of us on the weekends?

I have more money than sense, unfortunately it's mostly cents.

You're closer to it than I am.
