I have not followed NASCAR in many years but this headline got my attention. Stewart hit and killed another driver in a dirt-track race Saturday night. Stewart is known for being a hot head but he may have gone too far this time. He is not being charged and the other driver should not have got out of his car to confront Stewart. Tempers flare in racing just like any other sport but this time a young man dies.

Tony Stewart struck and killed a fellow driver with his sprint car late Saturday night during a dirt-track race at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park, the Ontario County Sheriff's Department announced early Sunday morning. Stewart will race at Watkins Glen International on Sunday, according to multiple reports.

According to multiple reports, Stewart-Haas Racing Vice President of Competition Greg Zipadelli says Stewart will race in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup event. According to The Associated Press, Zipadelli called the race "business as usual."

In the sprint-car incident, Sheriff Philip Povero confirmed the driver, whom Povero would not identify, was dead on arrival to an area hospital Saturday night and that Stewart was the driver who struck him. He said that his department's investigation is not criminal and that Stewart was "fully cooperative" and appeared "very upset" over what had happened.

TS didn't swerve, it appears, when the guy walked out to confront him.
This will be in the courts.

Plus, TS ran the guy off the track to start it all.

Tragic!   Sad

Well besides Dale, SR being killed at Daytona, this is the saddest thing I have heard. Ryan Newman who drives for Stewart, is a good person and I wonder how this will affect him? One thing has me puzzled why he is going to race at the Glen today? I just don't know. Prayers for the family and Tony Stewart. RTR!

Stewart probably accelerated before impact. What a sleaze!

Same here, but based on the video, it doesn't look like he even made an attempt to swerve. Maybe he couldn't, maybe he was shocked or not really paying attention, who knows what really happened right now. In the end, a young life has been taken and now Tony may have completely ruined his life forever.

If Tony did not swerve how come the front of the car missed him but hit him with the side of the car just in front of the rear tire. When you turn a dirt track car the rear slides around. There are no winners here. The young driver put himself in danger when he walked out on the track to confront TS. He got way too close to TS car and I do not believe TS meant to hit him.

You can say TS caused the first wreck if you want but those type of accidents happen every race on a dirt track.

Reports I see say there will not be any charges against TS.

My business partner's 10 yr old son is a huge TS fan. I will be seeing him Tuesday. I'm interested to see what impact this has on him. This is just a tragic situation, no matter how you look at it.

Racing on dirt and racing on asphalt are two different things. On the dirt tracks the drivers basically slide around the turns trying to angle their cars to be in a straight line coming out of the turn to head down the track. It is part of the makeup of the cars to be driven like this.
When racing on asphalt the drivers never want their cars to slide and can control them better.

It's sad that this happened and for that young man to walk out on the track in protest, he was asking for something bad to happen. I know there have been many fights between racers in prior years, it's part of the sport but I don't think there has ever been a racer that would run over another racer because of anger. TS has a bad temper but it's not that bad to have done this on purpose.

I truly hate this happened.  I feel badly for TS and Ward's family/friends.  I believe that during pre-race meetings the drivers are probably told to stay inside of their car if they wreck unless the car is on fire.  If that is the case and Ward ignored those instructions due to anger at TS or whatever, he put himself in a bas situation where he got killed.  I don't feel badly for him...

Harsh as this may sound, i agree. The kid left his car all balls-aflame, stupid with anger. Unless there is tape of Stewart turning around to hit him going clockwise, Stewart will never be convicted of anything related to the kid's death. And the kid walking down into the middle of the track will also submarine any chance for a civil award too.

Nevertheless Stewart does not go scott-free. He will be serving a life sentence, a prisoner of his own self-doubts, and of knowing that behind every set of eyes he looks into, there is someone wondering if he ran the kid down on purpose. That's a forever thing, with no chance of parole.
