4-star linebacker Rashaan Evans impressed by visit to Alabama

Auburn High School star Rashaan Evans was among the crowd of recruits in attendance at Alabama's home vistory over LSU last weekend and Evans, along with his parents and younger brother, all came away impressed by their time on campus. Read more...

"The atmosphere was just electric," said Evans' father Alan Evans. "Rashaan had a great time and it was great seeing the campus but just being there in that stadium was a highlight. It felt special to be there."

Evans, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound star who could project at linebacker, defensive end or safety at the college level, remains split between his top four schools, with Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and UCLA all remaining equal in the race for his signature. Evans' father said the Tide's continued success this season has confirmed everything the Evans family has liked about Alabama from early on.

"At Alabama, you know you're going to be developed properly," Alan said. "You're going to receive the coaching and the training you need to give you the best possible chance of getting to the NFL. They've proven that year after year. There's a lot of competition at Alabama for sure but like I always discuss with Rashaan, if you're going to be the best you can't be afraid of competition. Competing is how you become better."

"Da'Shawn Hand reportedly enjoys Florida visit..."

Five-star defensive end Da'Shawn Hand of Woodbridge (Va.) took the final leg of his recruiting tour last weekend, visiting Gainesville for Florida's game against Vanderbilt. While the Gators, who are joined by Alabama and Michigan as finalists for Hand's signature in February, lost the game 31-17, Hand told Rivals.com this week the visit "exceeded my expectations a lot."

"They showed me a lot of love and they were really honest," Hand said. "It sucks that they lost, but I still had a good time down there. I got to see how they handle adversity, so that's always a good thing to see."...

What Alabama needs: Nick Saban has begun showing an interest in recruiting smaller, quicker players at linebacker capable of making plays in coverage, due in large part to the increase in popularity of spread formations. Reuben Foster and Tim Williams both fit that mold last year and Alabama could be looking for similarly versatile linebacker prospects going forward.

"It's still pretty strong," Hampton said of his commitment. "I'm still committed to the University of Mississippi. I'm just going through the recruiting process the right way."

Speculation has been strong that Hampton could switch his commitment to Alabama, which would like to add another safety to its 2014 class. Hampton said he met with Tide head coach Nick Saban before and after Alabama's 38-17 win over LSU, and also met with defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and each of the Tide's defensive assistants.

As usual, there was a lot of recruiting news around the SEC over the weekend. There were a few commitments and Auburn hosted several visitors for its last-second win over Georgia. Here’s a closer look at some of the top SEC storylines. Biggest commitment: Mississippi State may have suffered a hard-fought loss to Alabama on Saturday night, but the Bulldogs did get some good news on the recruiting front. The Bulldogs were also close to landing their second ESPN Junior 300 member on Saturday. The No. 27 prospect in the country in the Class of 2015, T.D. Moton (Baton Rouge, La./Woodlawn), according to multiple reports, gave a verbal commitment to Mississippi State. However, Moton said Sunday he had not gave his pledge to the Bulldogs.

"I have to weigh my options," Moton said in a text message. "I haven't seen Alabama, Ole Miss or Florida State, so I'm taking my time. I haven't talked to coach [Dan] Mullen yet, either. But Mississippi State is one of my favorites."
