I don't see where he was "mocking God." As a true NASCAR fan, he could have seriously been thankful for all for he things he listed. All of the things he listed, could be considered a true blessing by a NASCAR fan. Should people not be thankful for their blessings? Shouyld they be ashamed of following sports because it is "worldly?"
Of course this is coming form a guy who stood up and told a congregation  of 250 (+/-)  that they would not be happy if Jesus Christ himself came and preached (at their church,) so what do I know...

Response to paragraph 1:  The Book of Ecclesiastes makes it clear that there is a time for everything.  Prayer is not a time for such attention-grabbing jokes.

Response to 2: Good for you.  I've wished I'd done that at times.

Seems there are alot of oppinions on this.

Here's my stab at it.

NASCAR asked Reverend Nelm to give the invocation. So he gave an appropriate prayer for NASCAR. I am a fan of NASCAR. You will be hard pressed to find a more Patriotic fan base.

I have taken my 16 year old son to Daytona 400, Talladega, Atlanta, and Charlotte, Bristol and Barbers. We love motor racing. We sit in the good grandstand seats when  we can. We hope to go to Bristol next month for the Sharpie 500.

We went last year and 2 years before that. We have radio scanners and Motorola radios and headsets with microphones to communicate with each other and scan the drivers radio frequencies during race. Lots of fun and it makes football withdraws not as servere.

Of course we fish and hunt year round.

 Cool

You make a good point Corch. and to add to it, I have been involved in the " Blessing of the Fleet" many times in many places. I don't think it much different, both praying to God of Wordly things. One is thanking God for them, the other asking God to bless them.

I have been to the Blessing of the Fleet in Bayou La Batre, and Gulf Shores, Alabama.

I listened to invocation live Saturday afternoon on ESPN. I turned my head and paid attention to prayer and enjoyed it. He is a local minister 30 miles south of Nashville area.

If I saw this prayer on The Comedy Channel I would have thought it was funny. As the invocation to a race where people can be seriously injured or killed it was not appropriate. I would loss all respect for my Pastor or Brother Ricky if they said a prayer like this in public.

My grandfather was a Baptist minister.  He'd never agree that the preacher's prayer was appropriate.

But, you are correct.  There'd be no baby Christians if Christians didn't have fun.

Us Presbyterians are maybe a little uptight. But I feel God got a chuckle out of it and appreciates the attention that has been raised by this disciple.  I enjoyed his enthusiasm for both NASCAR and the Lord.

You Presby?   Shocked Wow.  Not there's anything wrong with that, LF is too.  Presbyterians here are way left of uptight; just wow.  Admittedly, I'm no expert on church-affiliation tendencies across the nation.

The father/minister in "A River Runs Through It" was Presby. That was how I was raised.  The woman and I are "a little" looser with the reins (LOL).
