This is sheer stupidity.

Quote
The Eagles on Thursday released Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis, ending a standoff that continued through two offseasons.

Mathis, 33, was unhappy with the five-year, $25 million contract he signed in 2012 and has skipped all of the Eagles' offseason activities, which were voluntary.

Quote
Mathis was scheduled to make $5.5 million in 2015 and $6 million in 2016.

Banging your head against the wall.

Yeah, but he can't find anyone who will sign him for that salary. Sheer stupidity.

I believe Evan will come out just fine.  He wanted out of Philly, and he found his way to do it.

If he's financially able to make such decisions, I'm not sure why you'd judge him poorly for doing what he wanted to do.  There's no victim in the situation.

Did you read the article? He was trying to get another contract with pay raise, plus he tried to get another team to sign him & no one offered. Hope he set aside some money for the future.

Yes, I read the article.  Do you know any more about the situation than what was in that one article?  Did you know that the Eagles offered him another contract for a $1m a year raise last year and then rescinded it when they demoted their GM?  There's also stories that the Eagles claim of no one being interested or trying to talk trades is BS.

Evan is the best interior lineman available right now.  Surely you aren't implying that he's not wanted or isn't going to get another healthy contract.  He'll be just fine.

I think that was generated by his agent. Mathis is 33 years old, to be 34 November 1st & coming off an injury. Those are not good facts about a player. I bet he signs for less money, the same money, or retires.

It wouldn't surprise me if he takes less money.  I'm sure he realized that was a possibility.  Why does it bother you if he was willing to play for less somewhere else?

If you don't think Evan is a hard worker, or you think he's just a rich, spoiled baby, take a look at this 28-week training that he did on his own before the 2011 season to become the best OG in the game (video only chronicles the first 8 weeks).

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezaAMcCy3u4" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezaAMcCy3u4</a>

BTW, he was doing that at an athletic training center that he owns in Arizona where many of the top pro athletes now train in the offseason.

If he ends up signing for say $3 mil a year for 2 years, he would have cost himself and his family $5 1/2 million. The title of the thread is out-of-touch athletes. Is this how you "take care" of your family by costing them so much money & possibly his financial future? Latrell Sprewell turned down something like $8 mil over two years because he was insulted by such a "paltry" offer. He never played again & went bankrupt.

Yeah, no way I could support my family on a paltry $3 mil.

But $6 mil sets you up for a solid retirement. Don't forget taxes, it ain't $3 mil straight up.

MD, I could get by for much less. In fact, I already am.

Me, too, but an extra $6 mil sure wouldn't hurt. At least I could pay off my truck.

I could "get by" on $1million quite well and I still have 6 kids at home to finish raising... I have no problems with what Evan did mainly because, as someone said, he made that choice himself...
