I have some good news...

Japan has the most censors of anywhere in the world.  There will be a lot of really good data collected from this...

Smitty, what effects around the world do you expect to see from this? I know Hawaii is under a Tsunami warning and I heard fox say that the U.S. West coast could be affected. Your thoughts?

It's hard to say, but with an earthquake of that size there is certainly some potential.  There are areas that are more prone to tsunami's on the west coast than most.  My guess would be a pretty good impact on hawaii and some kind of small hit in oregon.

Most interesting will be to watch worldwide quake activity over the next couple of weeks.

That's great, it starts with an earthquake...

That's what I was thinking. An expert that Fox was talking to by phone said that there have already been hundreds of aftershocks in Japan.

Fox reporting that the tsunami will hit Hawaii an hour later than earlier reported (8AM CST).

Either hyperbole or the reporter is trying to count himself (without a seismic monitor).  I know I felt aftershocks almost constantly when the big one hit Central America 2 years ago (7.3 on scale).  Right, expert sucks.

I'm really taxing my memory here, but I remember learning in high school that an earthquake is something like twice as powerful per decimal as the the previous on the Richter scale, meaning that a 6.5 earthquake is twice as powerful as a 6.4 earthquake. Am I remembering that correctly?

No, it's a log scale.  Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude.

BTW, San Francisco 1906 was an 8.0.  This is 8.9.

It's logarithmic.  Each whole number is 31 times stronger than the previous.  Each 0.2 is twice as strong.
