Behind Marquis Maze’s career day against Kent State (eight catches, 118 yards), eight different Alabama players had receptions in the 48-7 win. That included redshirt freshmen Brian Vogler and DeAndrew White and true freshman Christion Jones.
The youth was apparent to Tide coach Nick Saban.
“I don’t think they played fast all the time. I think there was a lot of anxiety,” Saban said. “I don’t think we had very good ball security. I don’t think we looked balls in. I think we played in a hurry, cut the routes a little bit short, don’t do it exactly right, which sort of affects the timing of what you’re trying to do and makes it a little bit more difficult for everybody.”
The newcomers will grow up quickly preparing to play before 106,000 mostly hostile faces in Beaver Stadium. They’ll do so without a leader from the 2010 offense.
Darius Hanks, the second-leading pass catcher returning, will sit out his second straight game on suspension from the NCAA. Sophomore receiver Kevin Norwood, who caught a touchdown against the Nittany Lions in the 24-3 win last season, sprained his ankle against Kent State. He didn’t practice Monday and ran gingerly on the right ankle in Tuesday’s practice.
