Caught a bunch of smallish Rainbow and Brown Trout yesterday.  But the highlight was seeing a Cinnamon Bear (below).  Also watched a white Wolf at a Bison carcass (250 yards away so no pic).

Today's adventures, including more griz, an elk find of a lifetime, and 'catching the big trout'.

Yesterday's fish (Friday)

We fished Hebgen Lake again.  Lots of big Rainbow Trout and a few Brown Trout.  Beautiful scenery there; snow-capped mountains, bald eagles, wildflowers, and lots of water.  We caught a bunch before the wind drove us off the lake.  Here are a few of the best.

More nice-sized Rainbow Trout yesterday at Hebgen Lake.

Bison blocked the road along the Gibbon River, and we sat in traffic for an hour.  BUT, it was a beautiful area - we enjoyed it.

I've never heard of the Mountain Whitefish. How big do they get? The reason I ask is I thought maybe they might serve as a prime source in the food chain for the bigger fish if they don't get very big, such as the shad does for the fish in our area.

They get as big as Smallmouth Bass get: 4-5 lbs.
This trout foodchain centers on insects and insect larvae, and small fish play a minor role for trout.  The fish are full of small larvae, and it seems incredible that they can be sustained by such tiny critters.  But remember; the insects are packed with eggs and other fatty tissue when they emerge from the bottom.  The fish gobble them by the thousands.
