AP Top 100 College Football Teams of All-Time (#1 is not Alabama)

The Associated Press has been ranking the best teams in college football since 1936. Over 80 years and 1,103 polls, a total of 165 schools have been ranked and 44 of them have been ranked No. 1 (Minnesota was the first).

To determine the all-time Top 25, the AP formula counted poll appearances (one point) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (two points) to acknowledge elite programs and gave a bonus for AP championships (10 points).

1) Ohio State - 1112 points
2) Oklahoma - 1055
3) Notre Dame - 1042
4) Alabama - 993
5) USC - 974

10) Florida - 674
11) LSU - 655
14) Tennessee - 624
15) Georgia - 572
16) Auburn - 570


Most amazing fact:

Alabama has been #1 in the AP poll 74 times since 1936.  From Nov. 3, 1980-Oct. 26, 2008, Alabama was only ranked No. 1 once - the final poll of the 1992 season. The Tide has been top-ranked 43 times since under coach Nick Saban.

Well the other post like this had some great teams in superior positions but Alabama I thought should have been No. 2 or 3 at least. RTR!

I think in both ''64 and '65 we were not ranked #1 until the final poll of the season.  This is kind of a flawed methodology.  The only poll that history remembers is the final poll and who won the NC.

Basically this formula gives you the same credit for being #25 for 10 weeks of the season as you would get for winning the national championship.  And #25 for 2 weeks is the same as being #1 for 1 week.



Joe Willie was right, journalism is easier!

They should use a similar formula to what they use for the regular season polls with 25 points being awarded for #1, 24 for #2, etc.  Then maybe double or triple points for the final poll of the season.

They should go do that calculation and see who comes out on top.  It might not be Alabama, but it definitely won't be Ohio State.  Probably Alabama or Oklahoma.

  Chechem you are right. I have always been the hollering one game at a time and now here I am jumping into January and we've not even got out August. Thanks for the shake up though.  , We will get to see how great a coaching job is really done against USCw with our new found talents. RTR!
