In 2009 Florida ranked second in the Southeastern Conference with 40 sacks. But McCarney and the Gators were beaten by an even better defense in Alabama, which went on to claim its own national title.
Saturday night, in his team's 41-0 loss to the Crimson Tide, McCarney was reminded of that defense.
"I know what a national championship contender looks like after being one in Florida and coaching against one at Alabama," he said after the game. "I think they've got the pieces in place to contend. They're fast, physical, relentless, play-makers. They suffocated our offensive line. Every time we seemed to get something going, they just dominated our offensive front."
