WVU warns rowdy student section - Foul-mouth West Virginia Mountaineers Student Section Under Fire...

Quote
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The profanity flying out of the West Virginia student section was so loud it could be heard on national television, prompting a university official to warn students to tone down their language at basketball games.

They obliged a week later -- technically -- during a game against Louisville. But on 10 separate occasions students chanted the name of a woman that Cardinals coach Rick Pitino admitted having sex with outside his marriage.

A headline to an editorial in WVU's student paper, The Athenaeum, read, "Maybe Pitino deserved it: That's still no excuse."

WVU has seen its image take a hit from time to time.

Visiting football teams have worn their helmets coming out of the tunnel knowing that they're in a flying object zone. A Miami assistant coach was hit in the head with a trash can from the stands after a 1996 game in Morgantown settled a lawsuit with the university.

I knew about the couch burning, but I was unaware of all this other stuff. Probably not the best image to present on national TV every week (though that doesn't stop the conference from showcasing the Who student section).

That sounds like innocent fun (the Petino thing).  But I'm getting stories of men being attacked or shouted down, in front of their kids.  We'll step in the middle, intercede, but you can't watch everyone.  They're out of control liquored up and dangerous to outsiders.

All good reasons to sell beer at the stadium.

SEC has been pretty smart through all this.  SEC is in a position of strength and does not have to do anything.  So my guess is they wait and let the 'dust' settle and see who comes to them.  This could take several months. Big10 may also wait it out.

With Big East crumbling, TCU may be back in play.  If Big12 could hold all their current teams (i.e. loose only aTm) then TCU would be a viable replacement for aTm.  After all the hoopla, TX might back off on some of Longhorn network stuff in order to keep Big12 together.

Or TCU could make overtures to SEC.  Hard to say.

Source: UConn eyes ACC move

Quote
UConn president Susan Herbst is aggressively pursuing membership in the ACC to become the 15th or 16th member institution in the conference, according to a source with direct knowledge of UConn's situation.

According to the source, Herbst was having conversations recently but in light of Pittsburgh's and Syracuse's defections from the Big East, the talks have accelerated in the last 48 hours.

In a statement earlier Sunday, Herbst said that although UConn was "a proud charter member of the Big East" the school was staying "actively involved in discussions with our counterparts from around the country to ensure the successful long-term future of our university's athletic program."

OK, I am now officially not starting to like this expansion talk. At first with the TAMU stuff, I thought, "Oh, ok, I guess that wouldn't be to bad." Now with Pitt, Cuse, and now UCONN, plus who knows what else is out there, this whole idea is really starting to concern me. The whole idea of just four or so mega-conferences or whatever may be good for dollars, but I am worried about what is going to happen to many of the traditions of college football.

Me too. How will basketball be treated if the the super conferences are established. There are some schools that are very good in basketball but have nothing in football.

Both Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina coach Roy Williams have told ESPN.com that they would endorse the ACC expanding to 16 teams comprised of two eight-team divisions.

This expansion episode is just a couple of moves from setting up an ACC Basketball Conference vs several Football Conferences.  Indeed the football teams are driving the bus, but the ACC is trying to capture as much basketball $$$ as there is available for themselves.

The Appalachians down here are too busy making meth to pay attention to sports.
